Responding to the furor over the Republican party's opposition to pandemic preparedness funding in the recent stimulus bill, GOP leaders came forward today to reaffirm the party's pro-swine position.
"The Republican Party has traditionally been the pro-swine party," said GOP strategist Karl Rove on Fox News. "This is a moment in our history when everyone must ask themselves: Are you with the pigs, or are you against them?"
Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) also voiced her solidarity with swine, telling reporters in Anchorage, "The only difference between a pitbull and a pig is lipstick."
Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), one of the staunchest opponents of pandemic preparedness spending, said that the public should ignore the "scare tactics" of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and should "go about their normal business with pigs."
Rove agreed, telling Fox's Sean Hannity, "I think it's the pinnacle of hypocrisy that the same forces on the left who support same-sex marriage are now trying to limit our contact with pigs, which is the most normal thing in the world, and one of the most beautiful."

I just checked and Collins was one of only three Republicans in the Senate to vote for the stimulus bill (there were zero in the House), but in order to get her vote, the Democrats had to strip out the spending for a pandemic.

The odds were pretty good, actually. The CDC's been warning about Bird Flu for awhile, and this looks to be a strain of that. The warning signs were out there. Just like the US Army Corps of Engineers told the Bush White House three years before Katrina that the levees had to be built up higher.

And playing a critical role was Susan Collins -- for whom the necessity of obtaining her vote is in inverse proportion to the intelligence she shows in policy making.

Karl Rove, from his perch at the Wall Street Journal, criticized the inclusion of "$462 million for the Centers for Disease Control, and $900 million for pandemic flu preparations," on the grounds that "health care also added jobs" in the previous year. Such expenditures were, to Rove, "disturbing" and an example of President Obama's "lack of engagement and leadership."
Wrong as usual, Mr. Rove. They are an example of President Obama's wisdom. Get out of his way and do us all a big favor.
All of this is playing out at a time when Obama's Health and Human Services nominee sits on the sidelines, her nomination held up at the behest of pro-life organizations who want to paint her as the "Abortion Queen." The hold up is pointless - merely delaying the inevitable for "another week." Maybe the swine flu would be good enough to wait!
You familiar with Texas at all? This week is one of the main windows during which several subjects of the "TAKS" test, the state-wide standardized test, are administered to kids grades 3-12. Schools in San Antonio are shutting down anyway. Public schools closing in Texas during the main week of TAKS testing is going to cause huge problems and likely cost a tremendous amount of public money to reschedule testing for those many thousands of kids. And they must reschedule, because their public funding for next year depends on it.
Today my local school district's employees all got a memo saying, essentially, "please, if you think you even might be sick with this thing, or have any flu-like symptoms, please stay home. We know we have pushed for employees to come to school whenever possible in the past because of difficulty getting substitutes, but in this situation it just isn't worth it." First time I've seen something like that in the fourteen years I've worked for the district. I have to admit I was surprised, and not in a good way.

If I may make an additional comment here, it seems to me that the problem with the Republicans is the same one they demonstrate whether they are in government or in business: They do not ever want to spend money to prevent or control "worst case scenarios" - in fact, they will often suppress information that may point towards a risk of incurring a "worst case scenario".
Witness the suppression of NASA/NOAA global warming observations, or the risks inherent to creating credit instruments founded upon bad loans, or volcano monitoring, or the risk of a pandemic such as swine flu.
Now a business that is that shortsighted is just being lead by morons who will - sooner or later - cost the business money.
But it is the government's job to plan for "worst case scenarios".
The casual approach in American business - where it is all about enriching oneself today and let somebody else worry about tomorrow - just won't do.

So Republicans stripped funding for a flu pandemic and they're holding up the HHS secretary's appointment.
If the situation wasn't so serious, many would think this hysterically funny, especially since the Grand No Party's top priority is whether gays will be allowed to marry.
Considering the GOP track record, obviously the process for us to follow is review any other items the Rethuglicans have railed against funding and immediately begin planning for those issues to occur. Whatever direction the GOP compass is pointing, the correct action is to head in the opposite path, not just because of partisan politics, but to guarantee America's well being.
Just one more reason why the Obama administration should just do what they know needs to be done, and screw bi-partisianship. Collins and her cohorts have probably done even more damage than this, but issues haven't come up yet.

My wife worked for a company a while back and one of the projects she worked on had to do with Fire safety, such as the monitoring system for the plant and to work on the evacuation plans. Rush Limbaugh demanded Obama's resignation stating, "We can see his policies have failed, now he's brought this upon us. See what socialism causes."
Michelle Bachmann of Minnesota also demanded his resignation stating, "There's no evidence President Obama didn't cause the swine flu. I want to pass a bill making it illegal for President Obama to give Americans the swine flu."
Fox News demanded people form a spontaneous grass roots movement to help the rich with a tax cut. Glenn Beck cried and said he feared we'd all be turned into pigs by the swine flu. Fox news then created a nationwide day of "porking" to save the rich from the swine flu by "porking" the Democrats "Before they pork us." Said Bill O'reilly, "We need to get together and pork those fat cats in Washington, I've been waiting to pork a few Democrats for some time."
Pat Robertson demanded more Christian education be directed at pigs, stating, "Obviously these pigs have engaged in un Christian behavior. We don't need 'medical science' with its Godless 'biology' and 'evolving' viruses. We don't need 'protection' from diseases. We need to teach these pigs to turn from their wicked wicked ways. Breaking News: "Many hundreds" of schoolchildren are sick with suspected cases of swine flu, said New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden.
Also Tuesday New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said two people are hospitalized with suspected swine flu. He said the hospitalizations are separate from the outbreak at a private school in Queens.
The mayor says the hospitalized are a child in the Bronx and an adult in Brooklyn.
