SNEAK PEAK: SUPERBOWL XLIII COMMERCIALS

Super Bowl XLIII is just a few days away and, along with that enduring celebration of thinly-disguised homoeroticism, comes the even more enduring anticipation of the commercials that NBC will broadcast during that event. Look, I don't mind the build-up, the hype, the media asking stupid questions -- "if you were a vegetable what kind of vegetable would you be." (I'd be a fucking ear of corn, moron, how bout you?)

It is what it is.

But something about the roman numerals just sets my teeth on edge. I mean, I get it -- football as gladiator sport. A spectacle. Another perfectly acceptable excuse for men to avoid socializing with women (with the notable exception of my daughter Julie and her hubby Ryan), for men to revert to towel-snapping locker room half wits, and to temporarily wash away all feelings of inadequacy in a shit-storm of beer and booze.

But aside from the half-time entertainment, the commercials are just about all of the Super Bowl I can tolerate. Sure our economy's crashing, but these commercials are the best waste of money, by which I mean "the best commercials that $3 million for 30 seconds of air time can buy. "

Some sneak commercial previews:

Guys Like Beer Beer - Picture: Two guys at home kicking back, eating wings, watching MMA (Mixed Martial Arts. You know this is satire, right?) and about to pop open some ice cold Guys Like Beer Beer when...their girlfriends show up, all nagging and, like, "I thought we were going out tonight" and the usual girlfriend stuff, you know what I'm talking about. Enter: The Guys Like Beer Beer Beer Guy! He beats the shit out of the ladies and steals their shoes, thus allowing the guys more time for each other and more importantly...their beer! Why? Because Guys Like Beer Beer is for guys who like beer! And why is that? Because guys like beer!! (I don't, but then I'm not a guy...I'm a man. )

GoodLuckInAllYourFutureEndeavors.com - In the tradition of internet recruitment websites like Monster.com, this alerts people who currently have jobs as to exactly when they will be fired during the next six months. GoodLuckInAllYourFutureEndeavors.com has resources inside every business sector that will give unsuspecting employees around the country up to five precious hours before the axe falls. Why, just listen to this stirring testimonial from former Caterpillar manager Jackson O. Polenter:

"GoodLuckInAllYourFutureEndeavors.com restored some dignity to a difficult situation and supplied the extra time I needed to plan and wreak bloody revenge on all who wronged me. Thanks, GoodLuckInAllYourFutureEndeavors.com! I regret nothing!"

Pepsi With Ammonia - After Pepsi Extreme, Rectal Pepsi, and Diet Pepsi With Sweetbreads, the soft drink giant will unveil its new twist on the classic soft drink, for a generation that's not afraid to live on the edge or mix things with household bleach! All the great taste you have come to expect from Pepsi, plus the added kick of ammonia. What--are you afraid? Are you a pussy? Come on--it's still better than Mountain Dew!

Radium Coke - Not to be outdone by rival Pepsi, Coca-Cola introduces its latest product with an epic commercial that salutes its own 1971 hilltop "I'd like to buy the world a Coke" ad, with a cross-section of new, hip young people singing at night, their bodies aglow in radioactive luminousness caused by ingesting the metallic element. Touchingly beautiful, beautifully touching.

The Ford Hellfreezer - At last: American automotive technology and ingenuity are delivering the ultimate environmentally sound hybrid vehicle whose emissions actually purify the air while providing unheard of fuel efficiency and manly, supercharged power with immediate response when you step on the pedal--all for only $15,000! (note: will not be ready until 2546; prices may rise accordingly.)

Joe Mama (NBC) - From the producers of All-Star Beheadings and "Howie Mandel's Celebrity Catheter," comes this emotionally charged reality show for the spring in which ten fast-track career women are given promotions, then drugged and impregnated by NBC President and CEO Jeff Zucker, then told that Roe vs. Wade has been overturned by the Supreme Court. Who will be first to get across the border for an "illegal" abortion and who will be stuck with an unwanted child that will receive no love? (Hey, it could happen!)

The Mongoloids - Highly anticipated trailer for one of Judd Apatow's 35 comedies this year: Ace (Seth Rogen) and Jeb (Paul Rudd) are hard-up single guys who watch so much porn, smoke so much pot, and play so many video games that they inadvertently reassemble their DNA and develop Down's syndrome. Much to their surprise, hot women revel in their lovable, tongue-protruding, drool-flinging ways, with laughs and lessons aplenty.

PETA Ad #2 - Now that NBC has rejected PETA's commercial which featured scantily dressed models masturbating with vegetables as "not utilizing enough summer squash," the animal rights organization is going with an old standby: footage of Scottish Fold kitties in a sock intercut with Nazis, drunk frat boys tipping cows, dancing animated pigs from "Hee Haw," obese men stuck to vinyl couches, and Iron Eyes Cody crying beet juice.

Balderdash Investments - One of the country's oldest and most trusted financial firms reveals a new, more transparent approach in dealing with its clients that befits the Obama era. President Stanley Balderdash the IXth tells viewers that he and his highly-paid advisers have absolutely no idea what the fuck is going on and, at no time in the past, ever did. "Balderdash Investments. We've got nothing. But at least we admit it."

I know you're all been waiting for Dr. B.'s Super Bowl prediction. I'm predicting the Cardinals score II touchdowns in the IVth quarter and win by XIV. (Come back later this week when the above will be translated into Latin. A lapsed Roman Catholic prelate will be online to assist you through some of the knottier passages. We are told that boys between the ages of 8-13 will be bumped to the head of the line.)

By the way, since you won't see PETA Ad #1 on NBC, here it is:

There was little objection when Hardee's aired this Paris Hilton ad back in 2005 (posted by commenter request):

THE TOP TEN PROVISIONS OF THE GOP 'PRIMITIVE STIMULATIVE' PLAN

President-Actually Barack Obama's Stimulus Package passed the House of Representatives with ZERO (Not one. Zero. Zippo. Nada. Nil. None) republican votes, even though house democrats included things in this package specifically to bring in congressional republicans.

Yesterday U.S. Senate republicans accepted President-Actually Obama's offer to search for a compromise on an economic stimulus bill that could end up costing around $900 billion, as long as tax cuts play a large role. The Senate is expected to start considering the massive bill next week. Senate republican Leader Mitch McConnell said, "We look forward to offering amendments to improve this critical legislation."

Here are ten of the amendments Senate republicans are offering:

1. Re-sod Guantanamo.

2. Free sterilization of minorities.

3. All state aid in the form of loans — to be paid back to the “Republican National Committee.”

4. “Jet Stamps” — for corporate CEOs.

5. Expand Electric Grid, to facilitate comeback of the electric chair.

6. Mass transit funds — to deport “illegals.”

7. Tax credits for purchases of semi-automatic weapons.

8. Coupons for conversion of analog TV — to Rush Limbaugh radio.

9. Infrastructure spending — erect ten-story ‘Ten Commandments’ in every state capital.

10. Supplemental infrastructure spending — erect world’s largest solar panel directly over Nancy Pelosi’s office.

CITIGROUP: FINE, WE'LL RETURN OUR FREAKIN' JET! JERKS!

Citigroup is slowly learning the reason why they can't have nice things. It's that stupid $45 billion government bailout.

After reports surfaced that Citigroup had ordered themselves up a brand new luxurious $50 million corporate jet from France, lawmakers and rational people everywhere started pressuring them to cancel delivery of the Dassault Falcon 7X, arguing that buying a private plane after getting rescued by taxpayer money is too stupid to even bother talking about. Citigroup responded that a $50 million jet could help cut costs, though it failed to be the first on the planet to explain how a $50 million private jet purchase could ever possibly be considered a cost-cutting measure. Citigroup reps then went on to complain about the cancellation penalties they'll incur if they don't go through with the purchase, and when no one gave a crap executives likely just fell on the floor and burst into tears.

Under pressure from President Obama, officials of his administration called Citigroup about the company's new $50 million corporate jet and told execs to "fix it."

In the end, they canceled the jet, and now none of the thousands of Citigroup employees around the world has any idea how they're supposed to get around. Answer them that, stupid congress. Stupid taxpayers. Who's gonna drive Citigroup home tonight?

WELCOME TO - - - - BLAGO TV

Everyone's favorite disgraced governor, Rod Blagojevich, has been making the talk show rounds these past few days. After suggesting that he had considered Oprah Winfrey as a replacement for Barack Obama in the Senate, the beleaguered Blago appeared Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America" and "The View," and gave his first live prime-time interview on CNN's "Larry King Live."

Larry? Sure. GMA? Okay, why not. But once you start gossiping with the ladies of "The View," buddy, you are off the deep end in terms of your television bookings. Sharp-eyed viewers might have caught Blago appearing on a few other shows this week. Check your local listings for re-air times.

THE TYRA BANKS SHOW: Tyra talks with Rod Blagojevich about the challenges he has faced trying to hold on to his family during these difficult times, after which the two discuss 50 smart and sassy hairstyles for the coming spring.

TWO AND A HALF MEN: Blagojevich appears in a guest star turn as Jake's new substitute teacher while his regular teacher is out on maternity leave. Alan isn't happy about the turn of events and urges Jake to trust his own moral center, but randy Uncle Charlie finds out that Blago's chief of staff is single, attractive and in counseling for sex addiction. A battle of wills ensues as Alan tries to get Blago fired while Charlie does his best to keep him in the job until he can score with Blago's number two.

ROCK OF LOVE BUS WITH BRET MICHAELS: In the latest episode, Melissa and Beverly challenge each other to a pillow fight to win some alone time with Bret, while Rod Blagojevich prepares a four-course meal wearing nothing but fishnets and a revealing maid outfit in order to catch Bret's eye and get backstage passes to his next show.

ESCAPE TO CHIMP EDEN: Rod Blagojevich joins the cast of this Animal Planet favorite as "Rod," a chimpanzee whose wild habits and unpredictable behavior have made mating difficult. The other males in the group seem skeptical of this newcomer, but in the end, Rod's hilarious antics and lush, well-groomed coat win the other chimps over.

DEAL OR NO DEAL: Contestant Rod Blagojevich is indicted on corruption charges when he tries to bribe the banker to reveal the location of the million dollar prize.

BLAGO A VICTIM OF HIS OWN EGO

Yes, that’s how soon to be ex-governor of Illinois sees himself: A victim. Hot Rod Blagojevich is massaging the media in multiple interviews (see the videos below). He likes to describe himself as being lynched by the system for doing too much good, without any hope of a fair trail. This public relations stunt might even work, at least in the parallel egoverse that Blago inhabits The real world of Illinois is just not that stupid.

In a news conference, Blago said:
The heart and soul of this has been a struggle of me against the system.
Well, yes, the system being the Department of Justice whose federal prosecutor filed charges of corruption. But in Blago’s view, he is a hardworking and honest public servant who ran afoul of folks who want to raise taxes. He even tried to drag the people of Illinois into his trial by saying that his “hanging” would be the hanging of the 12 million people in his state who twice voted him into office.

Even former Alaska senator Ted “Seven Felonies” Stevens didn’t drag his state’s residents into it. And just because you were elected doesn’t mean you get to stay in office. Nixon was elected twice, and he got the boot.

But Blagoglitch is ready to become a martyr for his state by opposing those nasty lawmakers who he believes are violating the Illinois Constitution. Blagowitless is even going to boycott his own impeachment trial. Unfortunately for many, his martyrdom will be metaphorical. He has an 8% approval rating, and 80% of people in Illinois think the state is going the wrong way. I suspect some wouldn't mind a real martyrdom.

Blago seems to want to make sure he goes down in flames, kamikaze style, but without an impressive target to hit. His reputation is ruined, his career is over, and his fate is likely jail time plus no life after release. Facing that future, maybe his outlandish narcissistic behavior, bordering on the far side of egomaniacal, makes sense.

Most likely to be remembered for his hairdo, Blago did make one concession. On a Chicago radio program, he apologized for the cursing in the conversations that were taped by the FBI. But his foul language is not at issue. His foul corruption is.

SARAH PALIN LOBBIES ABC TO JOIN "DANCING WITH THE STARS"

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin reportedly contacted ABC executives shortly after the Republican defeat to urge them to consider her for the roster of celebrity contestants on next season's "Dancing with the Stars."

Network insiders confirmed Palin’s interest in competing on the show, but said she seemed less interested in the media exposure than the clothing allowance and the chance to return to the lower 48 to avoid further ethics violations investigations in Alaska***.

Palin submitted an audition video of her dancing the lambada in full costume. According to network employees who have viewed the tape, Palin showed some major moves which she attributes to all the practice she gets with the First Dude during those endlessly long, dark winter nights.

Palin suggested the show’s producers add another dance style as they did earlier last season with Hip Hop. She recommended several dances popular in her state including Drill Here, Drill Now, Mush Mush, the Maverick and Moose Humping.

Newly appointed Junior Senator from New York Kirsten Gillibrand is reportedly miffed that the show's producers are considering Palin's request. "I can dance circles around that Bimbo," Ms. Gillibrand told reporters.

***Just as Palin is pushing an energy plan that she hoped to front her as presidential material for 2012, two of her top aides– Communications Director and Press Secretary, Bill McAllister, and Palin’s Anchorage office director, Kris Perry–are being hit with new ethics charges, to be filed with the state Attorney General today (Monday January 26, 2009) .

FAQ: HUMAN STEM CELLS (note - no Sunday post ; Saturday's my 66th birthday)

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first-ever human trials of embryonic stem cell research. Scientists at the Geron Corporation will be injecting special nerve cells, developed from human stem cells, into patients who have suffered severe spinal cord injuries. The subjects will be observed to determine both the health effects of the procedure, as well as any improvement in the patients' condition.

President Obama is expected to loosen the restrictions placed on stem cell research under the Bush administration, hopefully opening doors to treatment for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other diseases. But what exactly is a stem cell and what are the implications of this research? We got our lovable Q&A team back together to get the answers.

FAQ: HUMAN EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH

Hey, bro! It's been too long!

No, it hasn't.

Yeah, I totally missed you too, pal. Wow, can you believe Barack Obama is president?

Can we dispense with the idle chit-chat and just get to it? You want to know about stem cell research, right?

Yeah. That's amazing. How did you know th--

It's in the title of this post. I'll try to keep this simple. Stem cells are so-called "blank" cells that can renew themselves and can develop into specialized cells that play a wide variety of roles in the human body.

Great. What does this have to do with killing babies?

Nothing. Embryonic stem cells are taken from embryos that have been fertilized in vitro and donated for research purposes with the informed consent of the donor. Nutty conservatives would have you believe that scientists are ripping babies from their mothers' wombs to be used in a lab. This is simply not the case.

Whoa. You know I believe that every person, no matter how small or stupid, has the right to life as a misguided, ignorant lunatic.

Well, I think on that we can agree.

So why are stem cells such a big deal?

Because many serious medical conditions, such as cancer and birth defects, are due to abnormalities in cell development, scientists hope that by studying the way stem cells differentiate themselves they can understand and perhaps prevent these problems from occurring. Additionally, cell-based therapies may hold the key to treating a host of diseases, including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, spinal cord injury, stroke, burns, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Is that all?

No, but those are the ones they listed on the NIH website.

So you mean one day soon there might be a cure for my rheumatoid arthritis?

Well, "soon" is relative. We don't know when treatments and cures will be found, or even if they will be found, but embryonic stem cell research is a huge step in the right direction.

Eh, I don't know. If it's going to take, like, 15 or 20 years to cure Alzheimer's, why even bother, right? Couldn't we use that money for something else, like preventing gay people from getting married?

I'm not sure that's a better use of funds.

Or wait! Even better, let's use that money to develop stem cells that contain the gene for preventing gay people from getting married! Then we won't have to worry about it anymore.

Right.

They can still be gay, of course. Tampering with that would be a tremendous invasion of privacy.

You've clearly given this a lot of thought.

I've been laid off, so I don't have much to do these days.

You had a job?

Yes. Well, six years ago.

Let's wrap it up, shall we?

Fine. So where does Obama fit into all of this?

Barack Obama strongly supports stem cell research and plans to overturn Bush's ban on federal funding, which will hopefully mean the development of more stem cell lines to experiment with.

Let me tell you, I don't have any potential stem cell lines out there...that I know of.

How I've missed these chats.

OKAY, OBAMA, WE GET IT...YOU LOVE EVERYONE

Not only is Barack Obama now the president of the United States, but he's also a better father than you. Last Sunday, Parade magazine posted an open letter Obama wrote to his daughters, Sasha and Malia, explaining to the young girls why he "took his family on this journey" and what he wants for their future...and yes, dare we say it, the future of all children. It's enough to bring a tear to your eye, assuming you aren't already crying because you're laid off and can't afford food.

But Obama isn't just baring his heart and soul to his children. No, the man is so overcome with emotion, he can't help writing letters to pretty much everyone he knows. We've turned up a few excerpts from other letters from Obama. Read on to find out just how much the guy loves the whole damn world.

TO HIS SECOND COUSIN:

"Dear Phil,
I wanted to tell you a little bit more about why I decided to take my family on this journey. Ever since we met thirty years ago at that family reunion, the extremely vague memory of your smile has filled my heart. I am so proud of you, and I would really like you to repay me that fifty bucks I lent you all those years ago, with interest please, because now that I'm president I can issue an executive order to get it back from you.
Love,
Barack"

TO HIS DRY CLEANER:

"Dear Mr. Kwon,
I wanted to tell you a little bit about why I took my pressed shirts on this journey. You helped me understand that hangers and no starch are the foundations upon which we can build our nation's future, and you will never know the joy I get from wearing garments that you have graced with your smile, although seriously, 23 bucks to dry clean a suit is a total ripoff.
Love,
Barack"

TO HIS GOLDFISH:

"Dear Edward Fishyhands,
I am so proud of all you have achieved, swimming around and around that little castle. It gladdens my heart and I am grateful every day for your beauty, poise and cute way you pucker your little fish lips at the food I drop in your bowl. In the end, that is why I ran for president. I love you and I am sorry I will one day have to flush you down the toilet.
Love,
Barack"

TO HIMSELF:

"Dear Barack,
I am so proud of me. My smile fills my heart and I love me more than I can ever know. My grace, poise and humor impress me every day. In a very real sense, becoming president is exactly why I ran for president: to build a better future for me and bringing me closer to what I know I can be.
Love,
Barack (me)"

=============================================================

For those like me who blog mostly with political mockery, the last 16 years have been a glorious golden age. If Bill Clinton was a full-employment act for political comedians, then George W. Bush was a welfare program.

But when Barack Obama took the oath of office on Tuesday (and on Wednesday, just to get it right - seriously), the era of easy presidential punch lines may just be coming to a close. As it has been widely noted in humor circles, Obama remains a tough target. So far, the most memorable Obama mockery has ranged from the utterly atrocious (see: the “Barack the Magic Negro” song parody debacle) to the mildly amusing (Fred Armisen’s competent but guffaw-free impersonation of Obama on “Saturday Night Live”).

What’s in store for political humor in the age of Obama? Will he be the president who presides over the bursting of the comedy bubble? Or can he find a way to bail out the comedy industry too? I can't keep blogging fresh satire with yesterday's news, ie: Bush, Palin, and Joe the Plumber. Rush Limbaugh made himself an easy target the other day, but I don't want to bring him, Ann Couler, and the FOX wingnuts any more attention than they already get.

I therefore felt the need to begin breaking the satirical ice regarding President-Actually Obama, and today's blog is the result. It wasn't easy. I love the man. But it's my patriotic duty to let the snark fall where it may.

Commenters, do you think we'll survive the Obama Comedy Crisis?
