Barak Obama is already the president. The present administration is running for cover or for their lawyers while the world watches him calm the waters of social and financial unrest. Absolutely wonderful. Like finding water in the desert. I am positively elated about the entire turn of events.
Very reassuring.
Awesome Barack. I wish MSNBC or CNN would give you free time every week so you can reach people who don't have the internet. It is a blessing to have you as our President (forget the elect part).
Obama is the first 21st century President. Technology is part of everyday life. Newspapers are becoming obsolete. Other required changes will happen. I say if the MSM want to remain relevant, they will beg to cover Obama every week with free air time. Those people without the internet (and there a probably many of them) will continue to get their news from TV, cable and the radio. Elderly people, the poor and uneducated (who voted for Palin), are possibly the ones who would benefit from this.immediately.
MSM - wake up and adapt to what's coming.
Bush the Lesser has really left himself quite a legacy. I just hope he doesn't wind up making Hoover look good.
Obama has the good will of the entire planet right now. I wish him and his team (and all Americans) good luck and much success. He is looking like an epochal President -- the right man at the right time!
A 21st century adult in the White House. Finally, the President we need!
Brilliant Barack...rising above the smallest of our differences....very refreshing!
Can we vote again?
Feeling better already? A reassuring president who knows what he's talking about & talks well: what a concept!! Words cannot describe how grateful I am not to have to listen to Bush anymore.
Boy if President Obama creates only 2.4 instead of the 2.5 million jobs the media will be on his case...
lol
Actually those jobs are NOT easy to create and we're surely trailing the competition in that category. However, it is something we MUST do -we've got no other option. We'll either make a strong comeback or we will go down the drain. We'd better get our act together and apply ourselves as a nation to the task ta hand.
I love it. The GREEN Jobs and INFRASTRUCTURE Jobs are very, very easy to create. Can't wait.
I'm sure 2.5 million is the low end. 5 million-plus GREEN Jobs will be created under Obama's tenure. If he didn't have a near 60 seat majority, I wouldn't be as confident. So far, so good.
Who better to contrast the flawed and tragic years of the Bush Administration than the man elected in a landslide - President-elect Barack Hussein Obama. He has the dignity, intellect and good will to change this country and the world around us. I just hope that all who have cried in dismay at his cabinet and posts selections, will give him a chance to do his work. We elected him for that reason and my belief is that he will be magnificent.
I am just thrilled he speaks in complete sentences. Bush...how many days left??
57 days...and counting!
...and can read a teleprompter.
and he writes the speech on the teleprompter himself. Brilliant.
That's why we voted for you big guy! Seriously, the fact that we're this excited about a president (elect) that actually talks to US and appears IN CHARGE demonstrates how awful Bush really is.
Why? Why do we have to wait two more months?
because he's not the president yet! Isn't it obvious? any plan that goes through congress now would have to be signed by bush.
I love these weekly addresses via the Internet. It's like the man is actually working for us....keeping us informed, asking for our input and support, and being accountable. What a change. Thanx for posting them doc.
In the first two weeks since the election, President-elect Barack Obama has broken with a tradition established over the past eight years through his controversial use of complete sentences.
Mr. Obama's decision to use complete sentences in his public pronouncements carries with it certain risks, since after the last eight years many Americans may find his odd speaking style jarring.
Some Americans might find it "alienating" to have a President who speaks English as if it were his first language.
Every time Obama opens his mouth, his subjects and verbs are in agreement, If he keeps it up, he is running the risk of sounding like an elitist.
lol, but you just quoted Dr. B. from an earier blogpost. lol anyway
There are also complete thoughts involved. I doubt if this can be turned around. It may already be too late.
Since we have been in 'dumbing down' mode for the past eight years, can we call this new thing 'smarting up'?
I don't know how to handle this. A smart president that is actually telling us what his plan is.
Someone pinch me, I must be still dreaming.
It's refreshing to be treated like an adult as opposed to a terrified child. I can get used to this.
Barack is so The Man! Expect a whirlwind 100 days of new policies, new programs, new ideas made real, and a new start. He'll leave his critics standing in the dust as he does an incredibly fast start.
Its going to be freakin' awesome! He's going to have a Democratic Congress & no more Bush vetoes to help him usher it in!
What the hell was that!?!
The President giving a weekly webcast outlining how we are going to get back up and running????
Outrageous!!!
He said more in that 3 minute clip than Bush has in 8 years in office...and he didn't even mention the "evil doers"
Man, I just can't get used to complete sentences, fresh ideas, and a president that keeps his eye on the ball. This is just too good to be true! I'm lovin' it!
After 8 years of Bush-ian anti-intellectualism, I can get used to it.
Isn't that sad? lol
Every single time I see and hear Obama speak, it just seems and feels so odd. lol!
Comparing what we've been used to the last 8 years, it's surreal.
After not listening to presidential speeches, press conferences, etc. it will be hard to get back in the habit again, but I am so looking forward to doing it!
So this is the 'New Deal' of this era.......Not a bad idea. It parallels Roosevelt's plan, but obviously has modern tweaks to it.
It worked once, it can....and hopefully will.....work again.
I hope workforce education and training for 21st century jobs is cornerstone of the plan. We need people who can design and manufacture microchips and infotech, not know how to run a machine in a sock manufacturing plant.
Wow!!! A president who actually cares about the American people!!! Imagine that!!!
Excellent news from my new President!
I'm impressed to see him making such a large move so soon.
This annoucement will mitigate some of the lame duck panic on Wall St.
I look forward to the news conference on Monday.
How great this is that he realizes that we can't wait to start.
You know, trying to be respectful of the outgoing Pres is just not practical now - it's impossible because Bush is so lame now - Yes, we need hope and a plan for a brighter future.
Thanks Pres-elect Obama for being the kind of leader our country needs.
GObama!
Practicality is not the issue. Bush is still president and in charge. Obama has no legal authority to do anything within the constitution until January 20th. He's doing all he can by getting his economic advisors ready with their plan on Day 1. He's bringing the best and brightest into his cabinet. He's reaching out to Republicans and Democrats alike for new ideas and cooperation to make the necessary changes. If the most experienced people happen to be tied to the Clinton administration, then by all means pick people who can get up and running fast. There's no time for a learning curve.
Nixon lied and quit before he could be impeached. My God, what does it take for a president to be impeached at this time? Lives lost, permanent disabilities and families ruined from a fake war for oil and power? Shred the Constitution and use executive power to commit crimes? Our country divided and world image destroyed? Economic crises, retirement savings gone, jobs lost? Increasing homelessness and poverty? Where does it end? Our situation is unbelievable.
I don't understand how our congress and our president can basically take a vacation for two months while our economy continues to worsen every day.
Obama is not saying that we will stop losing jobs; in fact he says specifically that we are going to lose millions more jobs before this thing gets better.
What he is saying is that he will create 2.5 million jobs to sort of counteract the job losses that are surely coming, and these new jobs will be in infrastructure and the green economy.
He is not saying this thing will be over any time soon, but there are somethings that as a President you can do to mitigate the impact rather than stand still and just let the market take care of it.
That's what's wrong with republicans - they lack creativity Their answer to everything is just cut taxes and let the market take care of it, meanwhile the situation worsens.
This is wonderful. The mere fact that he is willing to TELL US what he is going to do, is a refreshing change.
I can only speak for myself, but hearing him talk and seeing what he is doing with developing his cabinet only gives me a sense of security... something I don't think I have felt as an American in... 8 years.
Everyone: have your kids listen to Obama speak .
Just listening to someone who can speak clearly and with intelligence will raise their IQs !
I just said the same thing...FINALLY a President whose actual presence and voice don't annoy me!
Could we just go ahead and retire George?
who?
You mean drag him outta the WH kicking and screaming?
Thanksgiving is in a few days, and President Bush could make it a really special holiday by resigning.
men to that! That would be a truly great thanks giving! But then we'd have Darth, I mean, Dick Cheney for a month and a half...
The Dick was running things all along anyway.
We need a massive WPA type program. Where will the money and jobs come from? We could start by getting out of Iraq ($10 billion a month), closing corporate tax loopholes and halt outsourcing. Just a start though. Much more can and should be done.
Maybe he will start the trend of having people who are actually smart and actually CARE in politics.
Politics has always been like "Don't blow my scam and I won't blow yours". As cynicism melts along with self-centerdness we can become mutually invested in each others' successes.
What a beautiful country this could be.
Again.
If the democrats get a filibuster proof senate this is what i would like to see happen, based on the dire economic conditions of the country:
Tax cuts for those making < 200,000.
No tax increase for those earning 200,000 - 250,000.
Tax rates (39%) to pre W cuts for those earning 250,000 - 350,000.
42% for those making 350,000 - 500,000.
50% for those making more than 500,000.
Redistribution of wealth?
Yes, just in the opposite direction of what it has been in the last 8 years.
We don't need a revolution, just some retribution.
The thing that amazes me the most about him is how disciplined he is and how he is such an effective manager. The transition is like nothing we've ever seen. His leadership is so no-nonsense and straight forward--even the critics have to see that. Of course there are those who cannot give up that old divisive political way of thinking, but they really don't matter at this point. The train is pulling out and they will either get on board or be left behind. The truth is, they will enjoy the changes whether they admit it or not.
President Obama will be on top of things in ways we haven't seen for many years. He is wasting no time in putting together a team of highly capable, imaginative, and trustworthy individuals to focus on the needs of Americans. I am so hopeful that he has what it takes to move us in a sound and positive direction!
President Obama is doing something Bush hasn't done: WORKING.
Bush spent more time on VACATION rather than getting things done, and people are surprised that the economy is collapsing under his leadership? The man is hardly there.
The man is hardly there....even when he is.
I lost my job, due to newspaper downsizing, in mid-August. My wife's contract with a large area employer is about to expire. So we'll have gone from two incomes to none in the span of 15 weeks. Once our cash reserves are gone, a home-equity loan would tide us through -- if there's enough liquidity in the credit market for us to get one..
Here's a way to create at least 5 MILLION JOBS -- and my wife and I would gladly take two of them:
Institute a major push for the production of solar panels, wind turbines, and similar alternative-energy harvesting mechanisms;
Retrofit -- as was done during WWII -- idle factories to manufacture such machines, along with electric, hydrogen, and natural gas vehicles.
Use others for the processing of bio-diesel, which can be used in any diesel engine made after 1993.
Other jobs will come with the installation of bio-diesel pumps at service stations.
This is not just smart economically. It would enhance our national security by not funneling our riches to the Middle East.
Once we get the oil men out of the White House, we'll be able to make real progress in this direction.
We can Import the Panel too. Remember China and other countries depend on the USA to recover too.
1000'S are starving because of Bush's policies. We have to LIFT UP THE WHOLE WORLD right now.
You present some great ideas. Here's hoping your family makes it through this difficult time.
If we don't do away with free trade it won't matter. As soon as the product is perfected that production will be outsourced. No company is going to pay Americans a living wage when they can get it done in Africa or Asia for ten cents an hour. Companies do not move production overseas to avoid taxes. Lower taxes is a nice perk but that is not a drop in the bucket to the cost of labor. No matter what kind of tax incentives companies get they are still going to move production overseas.
Obama is doing what he can even though he is not yet in office,
but Bushy Frat-Boy is still in Washington doing his mischief by further weakening
regulations on the environment, in order to give last minute breaks to "his base",
the fat cats who put him in office.
The man has no shame.
The man has no soul,
no imagination,
no recognition of the problems he has created,
and above all, no sense of responsibility.
That my tax money will support his luxurious retirement instead of supporting him in a federal prison,
will disturb me for the rest of my life.
Take a good look. This is what a President looks like while on his J.O.B. Not like the current occupier of the white house who gets no respect anywhere.
Man's got a plan, knows what he wants to do and is getting the folks in place to carry out his plan.
This is action people. This is Change you can believe in...
As a small child, I remember the excitement of weekend mornings, when the cartoons would be coming on.
Now, as an almost-senior citizen, I get to feel that same twinge of excitement on Sunday mornings, knowing that the weekly address by Mr. President-elect, soon to be Mr. President, Barack Obama is on.
I gleefully grab a cup of coffee instead of a bowl of cereal (bad habits, still), fire up the PC, zip to doc's blog, and click the Play...
AHHHHhhhhhhh. Life is Good.
We WILL get through these hard times.
I have HOPE. I BELIEVE in a better future.
Happy Sunday, all!
I'd like to suggest that Obama also consider "jump starting" the recovery ASAP, here is how:
1. Allow each taxpayer to withdraw $10,000 per person or $20,000 per family from their IRA's TAX FREE in 2008 & 2009. This would be something that is easy to understand, fast to sign into law and would help our economy NOW.
2. Give home owners the same low rates that the big banks are getting so they can make their homes energy efficient using Solar panels and Solar hot water heaters. This will save the US much "wasted" energy and create jobs now.
3. Start increasing rates on Banks that are not loaning money out; it does no good to help bank if the Banks are not helping Americans get loans .
Isn't it funny the amount of money lost in the stock market match the amount spent in Iraq and the Excess Profits taken by the Oil Companies .
There are estimates that 40 per cent of all US energy use is in non-residential buildings. Nearly all economic jump-start job programs being advanced focus on deficit spending for transportation and utility infrastructure (roads, bridges, mass transit, tunnels, water, and waste water treatment.) The focus should be on "greening" and energy efficiency retro-fitting buildings that would have a more desirable impact. Consider that government maybe the largest landlord and tenant in the country. If a large percentage of buildings occupied by government were more energy efficient it would go a long way in reducing our energy dependence and put more people to work than transportation and utility improvements. There are some other benefits associated with a building infrastructure focus. Such a large scale program will advance energy efficiency technology tremendously and take some of the speculative nature out of the new technology so whenever the program ended the private sector would have the latest and greatest tech available without incurring the large R&D costs. If the government demanded that all building energy efficiency and green technology materials were US produced it would not only insure a multiplier job ratio (in the manufacturing sector), but also give US manufacturers a head start on world competition. Not only would such a program create a large demand for building construction workers, but if the government demanded the use only of US produced green and energy efficient equipment and material, there would be a significant boost in manufacturing jobs.
Excellent comment. You might want to throw in some paragraphs.....
Sorry.
(new paragraph)
I was on a roll. If I stopped to make paragraphs, I was afraid I'd lose my trane (lol cause of my nick) of thought.
If we harvest the WIND POWER in only 3 states we can supply all the Electric Power the USA needs for the next 400 years ! Just 3 states.
What states are those? You obviously have something in mind.
Look at the Wind Map for the USA . The department of Energy Admitted this in 2007 !
That is where Pickins got his idea for the wind farms
Obama's plan sounds like FDR's "new deal" revisited.
The new deal was necessary for the 1930's, and this plan may well be what is needed for the 2000's.
Obama is showing that he will not be asleep at the wheel, as Bush has been.
as dismal as everything is looking, it's comforting to have an intelligent, trustworthy adult taking charge
i love the FDR fireside you tube chats....and the fact we can all talk about what he said...
my thoughts: In order for this to happen there will have to be a massive infrastructure and job training program in this country.
Wow! 2.5 million jobs. Maybe there's one for me.
I happen to have a nice letter of recommendation from my former employer. It says : "If you get this guy to work for you, you"ll be lucky!"
Finally, dismantling of Reaganomics to begin on Jan 21, 2009. That is not a day too soon.
AGREE 100%!!
i wonder will the rethugs follow up with a Hoover you tube fireside chat...doubt they know where the internets are lol
I have a question. Why aren't Americans taking to the streets (just like the Gays are against Prop 8)? If ever there was a time for massive and public demonstrations, this is it! The time for collective passivity is over. If you want a lame duck Pres to move now before he causes even more damage, its time to tell him what to do - not wait for the idiot to act on his own. I know Americans don't like the French, but there is something to be learned from their "social activism" which they display in order to keep their government in line. Massive demonstrations in every city and town in America TELLING Bush to "listen" to Obama and do something "good" for the country before he leaves office is the only way that the economy can be saved. Despite being a couple of "marbles" short of "intelligent", I'm sure he wants to do something for his legacy and will listen to the American people - if they "demonstrate" what they want RIGHT NOW. You're a great country AMERICA! Do as the Europeans do and "march in masses" before its too late. By the time Obama takes office, this recession could well become a depression that even Obama can't fix. After all, he's only a brilliant human being - not a Messiah. Help him get a head start by taking to the streets. You'll be helping yourselves and him!!!
Paragraphs, people, paragraphs!
I really like it that he does a weekly address. It kind of makes me feel like I'm "in the loop". Maybe it's a pipedream but I think he'll do a world of good for our country.
Wow! 2.5 million jobs. Maybe there's one for me.
These days, I don't have enough money to repair my brakes.
Fortunately, I was able to make my horn louder.
lol
we can always count on AdLib to lighten things up.
Why is all the blame of the economy being pushed on Dubya? A lot of what is going on is our fault as citizens of this country.
Who made people buy houses they truly could not afford? I know people who are losing their homes because they took these risky loans. It didn't seem very wise to do so.
Maybe if we as humans looked with our minds instead of our eyes, we could avoid such crises as these.
But the desire to have the once existing "American Dream" is very strong.
The economy will recover in Obama's first term because that is the cycle of our system. He will then win a second term because he fixed the economy.
Here's why ....
After Gramm(as in Phil)-Leach Bliley (which repealed the Depression remedy Glass-Steagall Act) was passed, the firewalls between regular banks and investment banks were basically eliminated.
There were some rules, mostly guidelines, in place to prevent abuses of the new construct.
Bush appointees turned a blind eye. (You'll recall that Dubya himself was guilty of insider trading, but was never held accountable.)
As part of his "ownership society," Bush encouraged mortgage brokers to provide home loans to lower-income first-time buyers -- those in the "subprime" market.
Riskier loans required special structuring. The problems were that (A) special bonuses were given to brokers making these loans, so they produced as many as they could, regardless of a buyer's creditworthiness; (B) the terms were not explained adequately; (C) many of the subprime loans were given to people who qualified for regular mortgages; (D) the mortgages were packaged as securities and the new owners of the bundled loans (and loan fragments) were sold to entities who did not manage the loans themselves.
Fannie and Freddie absorbed these loans, in many cases. They did not issue the loans.
It was greed on the part of the lenders and brokers, and a lack of oversight by the Bush administration. So, yes, this does fall at Dubya's feet.
Very wise, you big ol' Nostradamus, you! Not to mention that the so-called American dream is NOT a right, and many people were, in fact, too stupid to realize what they were getting into, because they didn't have adequate representation to explain the pitfalls of the contractual agreement, because they probably couldn't afford an experienced attorney.
Plus, I could not agree with you more with respect to the fact that when somebody is getting a bonus for making these loans, the prospect of creating, in effect, welfare housing, becomes so much more easier to render.
And they don't care, because they've gotten their fat comp checks and can blame their superiors for the policy.
This is why there needs to be government regulation. The theory that people will act in their own best interest (as Greenspan conjectured) turned out to be false, from the richest to the poorest.
The blame still lies in those who deregulated, since prior history and other great men had warned us what would happen!!
This is why governemnt exists, really. To protect people from their own stupid selves.
Uh, because Bush has destroyed the economy by shipping jobs and money overseas through free trade. Even if people were living humbly they would be shortchanged right now because Bush has shipped millions of jobs overseas with free trade. Now Clinton did push NAFTA and it was passed through by a majority of republicans and some democrats as well. However, just minutes ago Bush was on TV complaining that he wanted more free trade but congress wasn't supportive enough, and he had already expanded free trade from 4 countries when he took office, to free trade with 14 countries now. He's pushing for free trade with 3 more countries before he leaves office even though we have huge unemployment numbers. Middle class can't buy goods and fuel the economy, without American jobs, and free trade destroys American jobs. When you have free trade with poor countries - your own country becomes poor. Also, you can't have free trade with other countries that have different regulations, environmental controls, and standards of living. We need trade tariffs and taxes. That would fuel our economy.
PARAGRAPHS DAMMIT!!!!!
