You can't rely on computers for the count because computers can be programmed to erase evidence of rigging, and they can be hacked very, very easily, by anyone with just a little knowledge, again with no trace.
THIS MEANS THERE CAN NEVER BE EVIDENCE THAT YOUR VOTE WAS COUNTED AT ALL, OR IF IT WAS COUNTED THAT IT WAS COUNTED CORRECTLY, IF YOU VOTED ON A COMPUTER.
With electronic touch-screen voting, the ability to perform both oversight and have any checks and balances is entirely gone, entrusted to private companies with secret software that can never been overseen by anybody.
For the life of me, I can not understand why a paper ballot with optical reading capability for tabulation is not used. Simple, easily tabulated and with verifiable audit trail. The technology has been around for decades. Oops, I forgot that there is money to be made and elections to be stolen.
Maybe this will get the problem enough publicity that we will FINALLY get FEC regulations requiring that all electronic voting machines have their hardware designs and software source code publicly diclosed and that they generate a recountable, auditable paper trail.
I am an IT professional and I'm here to tell you that computers are not to be trusted with something as important as the conduct of our elections unless every single aspect of their operation is subject to public scrutiny. The government has plenty of ways to guarantee the exclusivity of the manufacturer's rights in their intellectual property without resorting to "trade secrets."
Voters in New York (are you paying attention Dr. B. & Buffy?) must be very concerned. They have just taken part in the last election for their beloved lever voting machines.
Those machines will be replaced by a voting system from one of the vendors who has provided the machines that failed in counties across the country.
It cannot be a good feeling to go from the big, clunky mechanical machines to a system that is computer based and prone to error and failure.
This voting machine business sounds fishy, all right. Any chance of getting to the bottom of it? What happened regarding the Dems' 2004 and 2006 demands for the raw data?

Everywhere a Democrat lost that has a Republican Secretary of State the odds are much higher that fraud or voter suppression was involved.
Would not be surprised if that was the case...
In any situation, if you accuse a Republican of wrongdoing, you have a more than 90% chance of being correct.
It's obvious that the repugs chose to focus their election shenanigans on close Senate races to prevent the 60 vote Dem majority. Greg Palast and RFK Jr. have stated that the Georgia Senate race has been tampered with to prevent a clear victory for Dem Martin and keep Chambliss in his seat. There's a blockbuster story out that Repub Norm Coleman's campaign has committed election fraud by using an operative who posed as a translator for non-English speaking voters and pressured voters to vote for Coleman. I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't hanky panky involved in Mitch McConnell keeping his sorry Repug seat in Kentucky too.
The Norm Coleman case may be the smoking gun that will force Congress to rewrite the HAVA (Help America Vote Act), a reprehensible law that the Bush Regime instituted to help them subvert the peoples' right to vote. While voting machine software is "proprietary," and therefore proof of fraud difficult to uncover, witnesses can testify to the fraud that took place in MN.
Writing proprietary software for voting machines suggests fraud in the first place. That code should be open source and audited prior to every election by a committee of software engineers from both sides of the fence.
Dude, the geezers are pathetic. Technology has its upside. Thanks to Internet, thousands of people can scrutinize this with all the diligence it's due.
Trying to pull a fast-one isn't gonna cut it this time.
If you actually knew anything about these voting machines, you would know that it isn't 'geezers' objecting to them -- it's the systems engineers who know how easy it is to manipulate the numbers at almost any stage of the voting process.
Diebold, financed by OUR TAX DOLLARS courtesy of Georg Bush, has pulled a real FUBAR on the voting system of the US.
Those machines have got to go. I don't care what source code you're using -- there is no computerized system that can't be hacked.
If our freedoms aren't worth the time to use a paper ballot, they aren't going to survive.
I LOL'd at both the video and the comic, but the stuff on bradblog.com made my blood run cold. Makes me think Obama and the other democrats who won the election may have even won by LARGER numbers than we know. The repubs tried to switch the votes with their fixed machines, but we were too many for them! Thank God.
it is totally absurd that the only way that a dem candidate can win is if they win by a landslide in order to make up ground for the 3 to 5% margin of theft.
my guess is that absentee mail-in ballots and provisionals were also not uniformly counted.
Anyone else have a problem with roughly 89,000 FEWER Alaskans casting votes in the 2008 Presidential elections than voted in the 2004 Presidential elections?
Sarah Palin on the ballot in Alaska for Vice President, and 89,000 fewer Alaskans show up in 2008 to vote either for or against her? WTF?
It's really shameful that nothing can be done about the corruption in Alaska. I guess people who vote for a known felon would vote for anyone. Then again, if Palin's knowledge of geography is the norm in AK, people may not pay much attention to facts or malfeasance.
The Federal election commission and the Justice Department can investigate - even after those results are "certified."
It is quite obvious that there was some fraud or throwing away of ballots from Alaska. By legally challenging the results of the Alaska election and getting them under Federal scrutiny, this may be resolved. Clearly the decline in total vote from 2004 to 2008 would be reason enough to justify such a Federal inquiry, even a recanvassing of each precinct to find out who voted and who did not.
Now is the time for the central government to straighten out the glitches of this election by enforcing simple strict consistent rules about ballot designing, counting methods, reproducibility and a vote-only database from which a voter cannot be purged by any local official. Using the "Get Out The Vote Act" and the Voting Rights Act along with the 14th Amendment would be the legal basis for this.
The time to act is now, not at the next election.
It is my understanding that if Stevens is barred from the Senate there would be a special election to replace him and Palin would not get to choose a temporary replacement. I am not sure why that is true. A little help here would be appreciated.
Pretty clearly election fraud. And when one considers that Stevens is awaiting sentencing for just such a crime, and Young is next, it doesn't take too much of a leap in logic to see what is going on. This needs federal investigation.
Alaska needs someone to rally thousands of civilized, honest and patriotic Americans who can help to overpower and eliminate some of the stench. Keep praying.
Keep Stevens in the Senate. Strip him of all committee seats but keep him. If not we will have to deal with Senator Sarah Palin. That's probably what the plan was all along.

Election anomalies in Alaska is part of the fabric and history of the state.
Rural Alaska, primarily democratic Alaska Native voters, are often disenfranchised. My brother, who is serving in the military, wasn't sent his absentee ballot.
Most villages have to vote a "questioned ballot" because there is no place to register.
The gerrymandering in Alaska favors Republicans in extreme ways. Some legislative districts have very little in common except that including the areas together negates the impact of Democrats.
The last election in Alaska had Republican Lisa Murkowski winning by a margin greater that exceeded the number of voters. Really. It was like 125% of the people in Alaska voted in the last election.
The Republicans, under Loren Lehman, were reprehensible. Hopefully, Begich and Berkowitz team up so that all of the honest Alaskan voters aren't disenfranchised yet again.
For those of us who also happen to be Native Alaskan we're aware of a longer tradition of disenfranchisement than most. Out of the 55 delegates who crafted Alaska's constitution only one was an Alaska Native. This was when Natives made up 40% of the population of the state...Who are mostly Democrats, which was why Hawaii, (ironically a red state at the time) was allowed into the union as a counterbalance to Democratic Alaska...
The ADP filed a formal public records request on Dec. 19, 2005, seeking the "central tabulator data file" taken from the Diebold-supplied computer used to run the "GEMS" (Global Election Management Software) application. This is the electronic file containing all final vote tallies for the 2004 General Election.
Under the public records regulations, the Alska Election Division is supposed to release the data file but the Division ultimately got away from releasing the data by asserting that the file was PROPRIETARY INFORMATION belonging to its contractor, Diebold Elections Systems.
This is so wrong: it violates one of the most fundamental principles of democratic elections.
Think about it: this kind of system has essentially made it impossible for citizens to observe the counting of electronic ballots and audit the results (a right that citizens were guaranteed when there used to be a verifiable paper ballot for every vote cast.)

Regarding the irregularities in Alaska, I have just finished reading mudflats.wordpress.com, and the latest subject asks about the big difference in vote numbers reported vs voters registered/turnout. There is also a discrepancy between votes and poll results for the top three races: President, Senate and House of Representatives.
We need some sort of organization to bombard our congressmen. We need to get rid of machines in our election process. Paper ballots with pencil and oversight of counters by both/all parties.
Canada does this and they have the results by 11pm. With this new democratic administration, it would be the perfect time to get our election process on the right track without machines.
Having lived a short while in Fairbanks I do not find it hard to believe that there was some serious hanky panky which occurred in Alaska because of Sarah Palin supporters.
Alaska is a corrupt and entrentched incorrigible retro throwback culture where there should be a federal investigation into the strong possibility that the results of the election were manipulated as a made to order action instigated by Sarah Palin extremists.
I met some very nice people in Alaska but Sarah Palin represents the worst and most ignorant of the rednecks up there in a state that buys off its population with crumbs tossed to them from the oil revenues used to payoff the whole state.
I'm very happy Americans turned out in large enough numbers to prevent another stolen presidential election, but this fraud has got to stop. I can't believe the will of the people means so little to the party (GOP) who claims to have a mandate on patriotism and Christianity. Vote suppression is nothing less than treason. Now I'm REALLY brainlashed...it's a miracle the elections went as well as they did. I suspect that any state, alaska included, where any republicans won probably won illegally: voters purged from rolls, electronic vote manipulation, votes "lost", intimidation, etc.
So now I choose to believe that EVERYBODY (except for a handful of neocons) voted for democrats, and that the majority of republican votes counted were fraudulent and not real. Now THAT'S my idea of a landslide!
