Don't fall for this! It's a cheap ratings ploy that's as old as John McCain.
It's classic "will-they, won't-they." Think Sam and Diane. Ross and Rachel. Or Turner and Hooch. The Obama and Clinton campaigns elevated the tension between Barack and Hillary for months, until June, when Obama won his nomination and the feverish anticipation hit a peak. Will he put Hill on the ticket? All through this campaign it seemed like they hated each other, but maybe they were just too scared to admit that they really love each other('s positions on global diplomacy and health care reform).
Barack and Hillary played this nation like a fiddle. The Primary was earning record viewership and the campaigns knew they had to grab onto a gimmick if they were going to hang onto that audience. So, natch, they went with the "will they, won't they" plot, knowing all along it was gonna be nothing but "won't they."
And here we are again, in the wake of yet another historic election season for which viewership was through the roof. There's nowhere for ratings to go but over a cliff. Unless...
The campaign had no choice. If they wanted to get a ratings boost via a wedding or a new baby, they should have kept Bristol and Levi from leaving the show. It was either dangle the Barack-Hillary plot in front of viewers, or the Obamas would have had to adopt a hip, ne'er-do-well teen into the family to mix things up (again, Levi didn't renew his contract).
So enjoy this plotline while it lasts. We admit, we're a sucker for the will-they-won't-they plot. It's hard to find "Moonlighting" reruns on TV anymore and Barack and Hill make for a pretty good alternative.
But we're not gonna complain when Hill turns down the post (Dr. B. predicts she will; no job security - cabinet members can be fired).
We'll just look forward to early '09 when it's time to start filling Supreme Court robes.

I did not support Hillary for President, resented her attacks on Obama, but I believe if he had not been running I would have been behind her.
I think she really would be a great choice mostly due to her knowledge of foreign leaders.
It will be a hard decision for her to make, she would have to give up her Senate seat but she make make more of a difference historically as the SOS. I trust Obama to make the right decision.

Hey if Obama picked her as Secretary of State, and picked McCain as Immigration Czar, the governors of New York and Arizona would have to fill the seats with folk who are not as likely to buck Obama's initiatives in the Senate.

She' not stupid. No one challenges a sitting president from their own party between terms, unless there's a Vietnam going on, and Barack won't be doing that.
Well, she may be looking to secure her own power base in the Senate for the long term. "standing up" to Obama is one way to do that, and it would not hurt her own chances for the next election.
And as for no one challenging a sitting president between terms, that has happened many times over the past several years. It helped destroy Jimmy Carter's chances for a second term, in fact.
You know I have come to have a lot of faith in Obama's judgement. He does not make decisions lightly so if he is considering her I am sure he has seriously thought about it. Remember he did not even vet her for VP (practically saying he knows she has too much baggage for that position). Also during the DNC convention all we heard from the media was the convention is being hijacked by the clintons. This is not the case. In fact he looked larger than life being able to effectivly use both Clintons to polish his brand. It showed a heavy hitting team of democrats and their clear leader. So if Hillary really is his choice I am sure (though it might not seem so at first) it will prove to be a sound decision. Remember Biden did not look that good a choice at first and Palin was hailed as the better VP pick...well? who still thinks that now?

I still think Richardson would be a better choice for SOS, with his track record as an accomplished diplomat. But Hilary I believe as a former first lady and knowledgeable senator could be a good fit. I must wonder though, if she wouldn't be more of an asset to Barack on the health care issue, which also was at the top of Hilary's priorities.
According to NYT sources, the meeting yesterday was meant just to be an open dialogue about what kinds of things Hillary is interested in - helping to pass health care through Congress, etc.
I don't think he's serious about offering her the SoS position. This as Dr. B. suggests tongue-in-cheek is attention-getting drama. 'Tune in tomorrow for more of the Hillary-Barack show.'
But, moreover, I don't think she wants it! She's not even on the Foreign Relations committee. The kinds of committees that Senators choose are reflective of their interests and experiences. She's on the Armed Services Committee, the Environment and Public Works Committee, the Health, Education, Labour and Pensions Committee, and the Special Committee on Aging - all domestic issues.
Throughout her career, she has shown interest in domestic issues like health care and women and children's rights, the economy. Foreign policy is not her strength, and as far as I can tell, not her area of interest.
Palin's been grabbing the media's attention lately...Dr B is right that Obama is merely getting the public to change stations and watch him and Hillary instead. He needs to keep the spotlight on him, show the world he's doing his job...it's a long time until Jan. 20th when he can REALLY do his job!!
I just can't see Hillary taking a cabinet position, even if it was offered. Obama wouldn't like the drama that having a Clinton presence would cause, and in some ways, assuming a Cabinet position wouldn't help Hillary's political career.

I see Hillary remaining in the Senate, or perhaps running for Governor of New York, building chits, and waiting until 2016. Although I don't doubt that she was privately devastated by losing the Democratic nomination this year, her own ambition is too strong to give up her aspirations entirely. She'll run for President again. At that time, she'll actually be a stronger candidate than she was this year.

I'm perplexed why she would want to be Secretary of State. It's not like she would be a trailblazer as the first woman in that position. Madeleine Albright and Condie Rice have already preceded her. You don't leave the most exclusive club in the world -- the United States Senate to become Secretary of State. You leave the Senate to become president or vice-president ala Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
Besides, I thought Hillary was going to play a key role in advancing President Obama's universal health care initiatives through Congress? She's always been singularly passionate about health care. How can she possibly have a role in that effort while serving in the State Department?

There are many Black "leaders" like Vernon Jordon for example, who would not support Obama until after the primaries had been decided because he"d been friends with Hillary for over nearly 30 years and that friendship is more important to him than politics.
So my point is Hillary apparently is a good friend and instills loyalty, and I think that after their battle for the presidential nomination, Hillary could be a good friend to Obama. They have a lot to give each other, as Hillary is both smart as a whip and probably already knows each of the job"s counterparts throughout the world.
All is forgiven as far as I'm concerned and I don't think Hillary should be tempted in the Senate by little devils who may instigate her to thwart the Obama administration with ideas of grandeur for either 2012 or 2016. I think Obama is correct in keeping Hillary close, and putting Hillary"s great intellect to use for his administration"s benefit. I would bet big money this won't happen. I think what is really going on is you have the mainstream media people desperate for a story about the transition and frustrated because of the Obama team's lack of leaks.
We don't know who actually leaked this. We have the word of one journalist that it came from inside Obama's team. Hillary's saying no comment, so far.
Even if they are considering her I don't think she would want the job. I also don't see why so many people think she would be good at it. What diplomatic experience does she have? Bill Richardson is much more qualified and seems to me to be much more of a team player. I can't see Senator Clinton being part of the team and subjecting herself to a group decision process.
Clinton would be a superb Secretary of State. Will she take it if offered?

Also, Hillary trashed Obama during the primaries specifically with regard to foreign policy and national security. This has nothing to do with being "mad" at her. It has to do with the fact that it is plainly illogical to hire someone as secretary of state who has gone on record publicly as saying that the new president is weak, naive, wrong, etc., on foreign policy. When she said she thought she and McCain were the only ones with the experience and the knowledge to be commander-in-chief, that just isn't a position you can come back from. Frankly, it was disingenous of both Obama AND Hillary to make her come back and campaign for the guy she said wasn't ready. It opens them up to the obviously legitimate charge that one of them didn't mean what he/she was saying.
So, it's not a matter of revenge, and the post shouldn't be a payback anyhow. And the words of a former assistant and supporter are very obviously NOT persuasive evidence of her superiority.

I didn't vote for Hillary in the primary because of her views on foreign policy - she was too much of a hawk who supported the Iraq war (which has since killed more than a quarter of a million Iraqi civilians), and whatever other foreign military action made her look tougher than the next guy.
I think she is brilliant on domestic policy and I would love to see her working in Education or Healthcare.
But Secratary of State??? I was hoping we would throw out the hawks - not appoint them to foreign policy positions.

Actually, this may be Obama's conciliatory gesture towards her; she may in fact, turn it down (that may be his plan/hope) and stay in the Senate, but it will help to relieve any post-primary hard feelings that may still linger . This is still politics, after all!
Clinton would be effective as Secretary of State (this from someone who is not a big fan of hers), but I wonder if she'd give up her role as a power-player in the Senate from a major state, for a subordinate position in a Cabinet with no policy-making power (or at the very least, policy that runs through Obama's Oval Office).
With Ted Kennedy's eventual Senate exit, isn't Clinton poised to be a major legislator for as long as she wants? Does she give up her elected post for an appointed one? I'm not sure.

This is the first woman's name that has come up, by the way, for one of the top four cabinet posts. So she gives him this great political asset. And she and Biden are really tight. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if Obama offered it to her.

I feel Hillary Clinton would be a very effective Secretary of State, not only because of her high profile in the International community but because of her very pragmatic views of the challenges we face around the world. John Kerry or Bill Richardson, capable though they may be, just don't carry the kind of gravitas that Hillary would bring to the job. it is a far more important position in our current situation than Vice President, and if I were her I would take it in a heartbeat. She still has a chance to become President in the not too distant future, and this job would serve her well in sealing the deal. But more importantly, she has proven herself to be a formidable leader on the world stage, and we need someone like that now in that position.
I don't think this would be a wise move for Hillary. She is only in her second term as Senator. She has an entire life left to live and much to accomplish.
She will move up in the Senate as her seniority grows, and even if she doesn't head a committee, does anyone think that the country and the media won't be interested to hear anything she has to say?
While she has a ton of detractors, much of the Democratic base loves her. Except for Obama himself, no one will be able to bring in the crowds and the donations to Democratic candidates in 2010 like Hillary will. Plus, no one will be better able to help the Democratic Party in recruiting more women for governorships, the senate and the house.
If she takes SOS, she will have to put forth Obama's foreign policy agenda. Nothing wrong about that except Hillary really isn't a bureaucrat. She likes trying to get something done, even if the effort fails. Once SOS, she has nothing to go back to. Whoever takes her place isn't simply going to resign if she wants to go back to the Senate.
If he wants her, and she WANTS to be SOS, great. But if I were her, there is no way I would give up being a Senator just to relay messages from foreign leaders to Obama, and then his response back.
Hillary has more power and prestige in the Democratic party now than she ever had. She would be taking a step down to become Secretary of State. She would have to give up her domestic agenda.
Hillary would not be taking a step down. You should look up the job duties for SOS because you are lost. Hillary is only a junior senator and she is going no where in the senate. There is to many ahead of her. Now do some research.
I disagree with this completely. she would go back to the Senate after being a major player in the presidential race with not a lot of seniority and no major committee assignment -- no leadership role at all. She is not the leader on Health care (in fact she isn't even in the top three Senators on this issue), and she has no other real issues that are known as hers.
If she really still has presidential aspirations, then SOS is the smartest thing for her. It gets her out of the Senate, where there are going to be many tough, on-the-record votes on the economy, the war, etc. that it would be better for her politically for her to avoid. Let's face it, being a Senator is not the natural path to the White House. Obama was helped by the fact that he was running against another Senator, not a governor.
Hillary serves for one term as SOS, which shores up her foreign policy credentials. Then, she runs for governor of New York which would help her executive experience. This is the smart thing for her to do both politically and in terms of her possible presidential hopes.
I like what you say....that a woman who had more experience than her younger, male opponent during the Primary and who received more votes than her younger, male opponent duing the Primary, must be SofS for this younger, male former opponent so that she then can be a governor, before possibly being a President let alone consider running again.. hmm
Not since President Buchanan has a SofS gone on to win higher office. Frankly since Nixon, it has become a bit of a dead ender politically.

But she does know many foreign heads of state, and she is very good at ingratiating herself with surprising and diverse audiences. The President picks people who have specific qualifications for the job, so your argument about Obama has nothing to do with SOS. Richardson is miles more qualified for the job than Hillary is. No put-down intended, it's just a fact.

Folks this is real simple. Obama has not forgotten how effective, bright and challenging Hillary was to him in the campaign. There is obvious mutual respect and admiration for each other. I believe that these are two individual who are strong in character and grounded in doing their best for the country.
Hillary generates attention and God knows we need someone who on their own can generate some very serious attention to diplomacy. It is not only the messenger, it is also the message.
I didn't know that we get to vote for Secretary of State. This is exciting.

I am now of the belief that we may have the best President of the United we have ever seen in our History. This man has shown how confident he is in himself however he does not let his ego get in the way. He truly knows how to bring all his friends and foes together and shows it not by his talk but by his actions. I am beginning to believe that he is definitely the only person who can bring us out of these perilous times. His two greatest gifts are he is a listener and an inspirational motivater by his gift of oration.
Also as a business owner he makes me want to be more like him.
You said it. He is so clearly outstanding. I would give anything to have his unflappable dignity and natural grace. Plus he is compassionate and kind. He is visionary, gaking the long view. How fortunate we are to have him. He will also bring out the best in us by example. Things are going to be much better, slowly but surely.
