Showing that once more that Republicans have no class and no respect for government and Americans, Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina , real name Addison Graves Wilson, Sr., yelled out "You lie!" when President Obama reassured Americans that his health care reform plan did not include illegal aliens.
"There are also those who claim that our reform effort will insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false - the reforms I'm proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally," President Obama said.
A loud voice from the Republican side of the hall answered -- it was Wilson (R - S.C.) who apparently could no longer contain himself with sitting on his hands during applause or waving some weird pamphlet around in front of him, and screamed at the President "YOU LIE!"
All eyes turned in the South Carolina Republican's direction -- including Obama's (drawing a second "It's not true," from Obama), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's and Vice President Joe Biden's.
Wilson, looking agitated, leaned forward and began tapping away at his BlackBerry, as if he were Googling up proof that the president had, in fact, lied.
"Shame on you!" shouted someone from the Democratic side. "Throw him out!" shouted someone else. First Lady Michelle Obama, seated behind and above Wilson, seemed to mouth a drawn-out "damn" at the scene unfolding before her.
The bill is designed to exclude those immigrants, though some Republicans have called for more explicit bans on funding for illegal immigrants and have claimed the bill will funnel money to illegal immigrants.
FactCheck.org described those claims as "false" and noted that one version of the legislation already includes an explicit bar on federal funding for illegal immigrants' health care.
Disgusting. Can you imagine the uproar if a Democrat had so little class as to do that during one of Bush's speeches? To be fair, Wilson was condemned on both sides of the aisle. Even McCain said that Wilson should apologize.
Joe Wilson is being challenged by Rob Miller for SC-02. In less than two hours after Wilson's outburst, challenger Rob Miller has raised over $11K. Clearly quaking in his boots at the disgust leveled at him, Wilson has issued the following apology:
“This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility.”
Right....

Apology??? Too little, too late. Can't control himself? Should resign immediately!
(doc made a comment yesterday)
Now that Wilson's apologized, he should resign, and then leave the country - preferably taking Governor Sanford with him!
They should run away together to Argentina....
And the "Too smart to be president" Senator Jim DeMInted
racist motherfucking Hick
that's a bit much.
That's not much enough.
The GOP is a safe harbor for some deep deep racists, bigots, and fear mongers of all stripes.
All of the ones who held up the papers and the one who said Ha, along with Wilson SHOULD BE REPRIMANDED BY CONGRESS.
As a nation, we need to understand from the display tonight, that this fight for health care has to be won and it has to be won by attacking, clawing, punching, kicking, or intimidating this bunch of threatening, indecent monsters.
Hear! Hear! I'm with you!
My Favorite quote:
"Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), the longest serving member in House history, said he was not impressed by the GOP antics.
"Well, you've got to understand: They're Republicans. They're just doing what comes natural."
I read about that. When the longest serving member in House history says it was the best speech he has ever heard on the floor of the House I am inclined to agree with him. Rep. Joe Wilson let his frustration get to him. It's apparent now that the GOP is headed to electoral oblivion.
Too bad the South didn't succeed in seceding!
Wilson was a one time former aide to sen strom thurmond, gee what a surprise!
stay classy, GOP...
wait, that should be:
get classy, GOP
Up until today, Joe Wilson was just another anonymous Southern Republican troglodyte Congressman, unknown to all but the poor people of South Carolina and the most serious horse race junkies.
Today, he's the hyena who disgraced himself, his party, and the House chamber by screaming "you lie!" like an 8 year-old during the President's eloquent speech on the most critical challenge facing our nation.
There's something we can do to let Joe Wilson know what we think of his childish approach to a serious problem -- we can help out Rob Miller
http://www.robmillerforcongress.com/
Doc: In less than two hours after Wilson's outburst, challenger Rob Miller has raised over $11K. (Plus doc posted a link for donations)
But anyway, thanks for the link, Tommy. We should all donate a bit today, even $5, and make a big statement. Tell all your friends. Send this VIRAL!
Rob Miller's website is down - I hope he's being deluged by thousands and thousands of supporters all over the USA!
Done!!!
HAPPILY!
Wilson needs to stop copying former, resigned Gov. Palin's homework and read the bill on his own. He'd know what the thing covered and didn't cover, if only he would read it.
You assume he can read.
Wish I could feign surprise.
If you look at the back of the signs waved, you could see a health insurance company's letterhead (I have a big TV with HD, and I paused it).
Bought and paid for, ready to lie, not caring about the citizens...today's GOP
I thought they were waving their notice of eviction from the trailer park
They were waving Monday's "easy" crossword from the Post.
They were waving their own version of the bill, on one sheet of paper, like their one sheet stimulus plan.
its what the "head" of the party instructed them to wave
glenn or limpbut?
doesn't really matter, just made them look like the assholes they are.
They were waving to disperse the fart smell on the repub side.
LOL!
South Carolina is now officially the boil on our country thanks to gov Sanford and congressman Wilson. Can we lance it already? I'd offer to sell it to China to settle some outstanding debt; but I hardly think China wants the drama.
South Carolina has the best tomatoes, the best azaleas and the best boiled peanuts in all the world. Otherwise, good luck finding a buyer.
Is there really such a thing as a best boiled peanut? And yes, I once had them in Charleston. They are the most disgusting food on the planet I have ever eaten. (Would agree on the azaleas, however)
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) the rebuttal dork wants some whupass his way too, huh? Then he should resign with Rep. Joe Wilson (R-South Carolina) as well. And if they refuse to resign, then the house should censor the members or throw them out.
What that jack ass did will help Obama in the long run. Wilson thought he could stay anonymous by shouting from within a crowd and then he went and shut his website down so no one could yell at him.
Complete Coward.
Sometimes those 15 minutes of fame, like your career, go by in a blink, don't they Joe?
thank you joe, you have assisted the reform effort, and we lefties appreciate it; good job, sport---(don't let the door hit your ass on the way out)
Let's help defeat Joe Wilson by supporting his dem challenger, an Iraq War Veteran named Rob Miller.
Please donate!

Too little too late with any hypocritical apology, this wilson guy is now forever the ass clown of his party. In a way that was a good thing, it just highlighted the point that the republicans only want division and have no interest in reforming health care.
the behavior of the republicans is simply low rent ... they treated the speech as though it were a town hall and they were the misinformed rednecks ... i'm surprised none of them held up a sign that said "where's the birth certificate?" ...
it was an embarrassment
They are misinformed rednecks, reelected, time and again, by misinformed rednecks.
Wilson was a Strom Thurmond aide; go figure; I do not think we (as a nation) should accept his hacked up apology; the President should just let it pass. As someone who lived a bit in SC, a beautiful state, the state is in MASSIVE NEED OF PR NOW. (I am white). The state looks racist (pretty much is),---and I hate playing the race card. Anyway, let's not accept his apology---it's symptomatic of SC now----he and Mark Sanford --------if I were there now, I would start galvanizing to drop-kick both their asses (and Lindsey Graham, but he is at least civilized and less delusional) out to pasture----
Repub congresspeople are showing their true colors: moronic, rude and full of hate, goaded on by the extreme fringe of the wingnuts. They have removed any remaining sense of decorum and respect in Congress. No Dem. Congress has ever pushed the hate to this level of vitriol.
As an American who lives overseas in Sydney, Australia - TODAY is hands down without a doubt, the most shameful day of my life as an American and that is truly saying something after living through 8 years of former President GW Bush.
This is what America has come to - yelling out things in Congress as the PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is speaking!
Good Lord, we have truly lost the plot and lost our soul in the process. And please don't think that the rest of the world isn't watching!
Sadly we are. I thought the shouting down of a woman in a wheelchair was bad. Then the speech fiasco God forbid their children listen to a president telling them the value of an education.
To yell at a President of the United States in a joint session of congress is an all time low.
I will not let a few clowns make me think less of our American neighbors. That being said I do think less of the GOP - they have gone from selfish to low life.
recent events within the past year make it seem as though there is something in the GOPs water that has rendered them babbling idiots. Just days ago they were making asses of themselves by claiming that the President was trying to "indoctrinate school children into socialism" and now this.
It's no wonder they can no longer win a major election.
He will be elevated to HERO status today and in the coming days by right wing hate radio and fox news. Just wait.
Oh this is so good--the white wingnuts look positively rude and out of control--Americans will be disgusted. Not all, of course (go over to Politico where they are acting like raving lunatics), but decent folk everywhere last night watched one more nail in the right's coffin. Sorry boys, you just went WAY off the reservation!
i am not visiting South Carolina as a tourist until they get better representatives
it is that simple
and I go to conventions there and hilton head and beaufort and callawassie island
i will not give them my tourism $$ so long as they send these !diots to Washington DC
The clearest sign yet that the GOP is full of ignorant, loud-mouthed, self-righteous "family values" bigots that have the temerity to disrespect the President while the world looks on.
And before anyone gets on their high horse about "libruls only believe free speech applies to them", zip it. You don't agree with what Obama's saying? Fine. Take it up with him using the proper channels. Don't act like a drunken redneck at a professional wrestling match & heckle him on national TV.
The fact that this even needs to be said speaks volumes about the state of the Republican Party.
South Carolina with its Governor Sanford, lying about hiking while he was fornicating in Argentina. Rep Wilson lying about illegal aliens getting health care when it is clearly stated in bill(s) that they don't get health care. Senator Jim DeMint lying about being "too smart to be president", when he apparently thinks "Waterloo" is a restroom. I don't know how many more South Carolina politicians can be as loony as these three but South Carolina is going to replace Texas as loony bin state after Texas secedes.
Wilson thought he was anonymous but shortly after he blurted his ignorant statement he realized he didn't have his KKK white sheet on.
LMAO!
Republicans: Rabid dogs frothing at the mouth, barking nonsense, with that wild crazy look in their eyes.
Pathetic behavior from a pathetic politician in a pathetic party.
The behavior of some republicans was disgraceful and proved that they were bought and paid for by the insurance companies behind the thuggish behaviors displayed at town hall meetings this summer.
Did you see the look on Biden's and Pelosi's faces? I would hate to be that guy today.
Must have forgotten he was in the congress and thought he was in the british parliament - they do this constantly with each other.
There are ways for the House Speaker to get you.
The rules may be arcane. But that doesn't mean they will let you get away with just anything. The majority does rule in the House.
For instance: They will reassign your office to another zip code.
Thank you Senator McCain for speaking out against Rep. Wilson and for those who booed! If you want to disagree with the President on his health care proposal or even call him a liar... go ahead and tell it to the cameras afterward.
How far have we come that a US Rep. yells "liar" during a Presidential address to a joint session of Congress? Shameful!
Not even President Bush's most outrageous lies got that reaction.
Well, maybe a poorly aimed shoe...
Rep. Wilson that apology is too little, too late! It wasn't one quick utterance that slipped out because emotions got the best of you...
You spoke at least three times in a row in a calm clear voice. The last times even after the President had to pause his remarks and you were booed.
What a surprise that you apologize after so many your fellow officials speak against your remarks. Takes you well over an hour to get sane again?
But the most important take away of the night is to look at President Obama's well reasoned plan at
http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/health_care/plan/
and learn more.
if wilson were a real man
he would fall on his sword
(its probably flaccid, but would be a nice statement)
funny!
No wonder their constituents behave the way they do.
Thoughtful Republicans should be inching their way toward the door. Time for a centrist third party.
Inching, if there are any thoughtful Republicans left they should be rushing the exits.
What the Republicans have become is what we used to call the Lunatic Fringe.
Except the lunatics are running the Party.
GOP you are a party of grumpy old men who never matured past the age of 10 - a very sorry sight indeed. Even the young ones act like crazy old men.
His "apology" sounded a lot like "I'm sorry you took it wrong."
This behavior is inexcusable and he should be censured by his colleagues for it.
"Let my emotions get the best of me?..." Oh gawd! It's not a playoff baseball game or viewing 'Terms of Endearment'. How dare he! I've never seen this type of behavior at any joint congressional speech, regardless as to what president was speaking. This is now his legacy - can't take it back. To directly call out the president as a liar. Unbelievable!
Well said. I didn't like something about the tone of the apology, and your analysis hits it on the head. In a setting like that, you don't simply let your emotions get the best of you unless you're quite mentally unstable, and in that case, you shouldn't be holding public office.
As a teacher, I would have thrown those idiots out of my classroom.
What horrible, repugnant examples for our children.
My son, who is 11, watched that historic speech with me and it will be ingrained in his mind that Republicans act like spoiled little brats that act out when they don't get their way.
These are supposed to be grown men, but they acted like they were in grade school.
A new low for the Republican party when I thought they had hit bottom. Oh, and I will ask it again, "WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH THE SOUTH?!"
They cling to their bibles and guns, they are bigoted racists, and they will never accept that they lost the civil war.

let him have it, both barrels.
i can't get through - keep getting a busy signal. he's probably got it off the hook.
i emailed this fool to start acting his age and not his shoe size....I also said he should stop acting like a hick from the back woods
They can't help it, it's in their DNA and fake news brainwashing. This is racism, pure & simple. I live in Tennessee and all my reps are reThugs thanks to the inbred, toothless fools who vote these charlatans into office.
46% of the SC vote in 2008 were for Obama. The ones who are trying to turn the red tide need a little encouragement from Dems around the country. Keep a good thought for Blues living in Red states.
If Joe Wilson has any class at all, he needs to apologize not just to the President, but to every member of Congress and also to the American people for his disruptive and disrespectful behavior. Unfortunately, I just have this feeling in my gut that by the end of the day, Limbaugh and Beck will canonize him and call him a hero.
You got that right, as well as asking others to act out in the same fashion.
Here's the thing though. I think if a Democratic President had been standing at that podium saying the exact same things - Joe might have fumed. Squirmed. Hissed. But not disrupted with a totally sophomoric display. Nor would he and his friends have carried their signs left over from Town Halls and other goofy props.
Decorum didn't matter to him. Because he didn't see Obama, the President. Or Barack Obama, the man. He saw a "boy". I'm from the south. I know a racist when I see one and his complete lack of respect of even the civilities and loss of control would never have happened if Barack Obama were 10 shades lighter and named President Bubba Lee Smith.
Yep!
You speak the truth.
More republican intolerant family values.
I bet he's gay.
if he isn't gay I bet he's cheating on his wife like Sanford
Sore losers, filled with hate and fear. Add a touch of racism here and there and a dash of psychosomatic delusion, a sprinkle of paranoia ... result:
The Current Republican Party.
Excellent.
Barney Frank said what I have felt all along, when someone uses ridiculous arguments against what you are doing then that is all they have, they can't offer a solution so they tear down and ridicule.
So there you have it folks, a washed up bunch of whiners who have to heckle because they don't have a single good idea about anything, never have, never will. They are going down faster every day, soon to be a minority party without power.
The Republicants are a bunch of totally discredited, bought and paid for puppets of big business who don't care about helping average Americans.
Case in point: More than 2/3 of the wealth of this country is now in the hands of the top 1 percent. The vast majority of this massive transfer of wealth occurred during Bush's reign.
If they really wanted to do something about health care, they would have done it when they had the majority in congress, which since Reagan outnumbered a Democratic majority by 2 to 1.
What, and lose the big bucks donated to them by the insurance companies? Never, not then and not now.
I read that on his twitter page he had planned a disruption well in advance.
Ask for Censure. Write the Speaker of the House.
Speaker of the House: http://www.speaker.gov/contact
Ask that he apologize and resign. Let him know how you feel.
Wilson: http://www.house.gov/formwilson/IMA/issue.htm
Thank you for the links. I did both. I know he issued an apology last night, but that is not good enough for such an appalling act against our President. He should resign or be censured.
Please go to www.gop.gov .... the GOP website .... read their 'proposal' (I did not see any thing realistic!) on health care reform. Please your comments on how you feel about their proposal right on the site.
All over the world, people will see video of Wilson, shudder and think, "Typical rude American."
That punk made ALL of us appear rude, arrogant, and ignorant.
He certainly did but honestly, after the crap all summer, I am fairly certain the world already knows we have a lot of ignorant folks here.
Message on his website:
Joe Wilson
This site is down for maintenance.
Please check back again soon.
Hey Joe, man up.
Maintenance - Yup. He's having his brains retreaded.
I will never play nice with a republican again. Ever.
I think it simply demonstrates just how effective the Presidents speech was. The GOP is just as frustrated...many looked glum and sour, many were texting on their Blackberries. I think the more gaffes likes this executed by the GOP, the better President Obama looks.
Classy response to a very crass act. Keep um' comin!
I totally agree. They simply are dumbfounded on how well spoken and confident Pres Obama was last night.
The apology was a pre-planned part of Wilson's act. Expect to see him on talk shows
And it's Obama's approval rating that is sinking. How can any moderate watch the Republicans last night and still blame Obama for not getting Health Care done? Is our population really that stupid?
Sigh.
in a word
yes
next question?
Obama's numbers have been dropping because during the August recess, there was a vacuum where no one heard from him and the wingnuts were out in full force scaring everybody, even those of us that worked for and voted for Obama. If he works hard for the public option that he pretty much promised in the campaign, then those numbers will shoot back up.
Sen. Joe Wilson broke GOP rules as a member of the House:
"The precedents of the House allow a wide latitude in criticism of the President, other executive officials, and the government itself. However, it is not permissible to use language that is personally offensive to the President, such as referring to him as a “hypocrite” or a “liar.”
http://rules-republicans.house.gov/Educational/Read.aspx?ID=5
This seems to make the case for censure.
Thanks for that link, Oh Wise One. I will be sharing it.
Republicans need to be voted out of office, because the Republicans in Congress right now have shown themselves to be uneducated, and willing to tell bald face lies to the American people, especially the elderly.
We watched this August as lying Republicans tried to spread the birther rumor that President Obama was not born in the USA. We watched this summer as Republican after Republican went on t.v, and told bald face lies about death panels, trying to deliberately scare old people. Disgusting!
REPUBLICANS HAVE SHOWN THAT THEY CANNOT BE TRUSTED, and NONE OF THEM SHOULD BE SITTING IN OUR CONGRESS COLLECTING PAYCHECKS PAID WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS.
The Republicans in Congress need to be voted out, to make way for people with integrity.
I would NEVER want President Obama to look at me like that. Oh man. And Nancy Pelosi's glare could cut glass. That dude is done for.
President Obama was not playing when he looked at him.
Both sides of the political spectrum often slam the other. Each distorts and twists what the other says. But Democrats have never done this. Democrats have never openly heckled a Republican president during a joint session of congress. Democrats have never brought signs to a presidential address. What kind of Banana Republic do the Republicans think we're living in? This isn't how business is conducted in the United States. At least it wasn't, until the Republicans decided it was better to crash the bus than to keep it on the road. This is disgusting. I dare Fox News to defend this. Sadly, I bet they will. But I never watch them, so I'll only find out by surfing the net.
Did Wilson issue his apology on air? I watched CNN coverage for more than an hour following the speech, and never heard from him, or the fact that he issued an apology.
ABC reported it. Good for them!
Not on air. The so-called apology was something written FROM HIS OFFICE (probably not by him but by his handlers doing damage control).
And he called Rahm Emanuel, after Rahm demanded the conversation.
don't fuck with rahm
I bet Rahm tore him a new one.
oh to have been a fly on that wall!
Wilson should have been escorted out. The level of disrespect that he as well as the media and many members of the GOP continue to exhibit is deplorable --- great modeling for our children, huh?! And they have the NERVE to suggest Obama would "indoctrinate" and "brain-wash" children in his address to them to stay in school --- this is pure an simple, RACISM and the denial of that is even more disgusting! Would the GOP be okay with someone treating our previous president the way Obama has been treated? I think NOT! The hypocrisy is amazing!!!! Americans should be appalled and this type of behavior should NOT be tolerated!!!!
Republicans elected officials are bringing new meaning to disrespecting the president.
Even when democrats fully disagreed with everything Bush said and did in the 8 years he was president, not ONE of them would ever consider behaving that way during a presidential address to congress. If I thought that these people had shame, I'd say they should be ashamed of themselves. But, they don't.
The problem is, I bet many of his constituents are cheering him as a hero today.
yup
Sean Insanity will be telling him what a Great American he is.
I just couldn't believe some of the things the Republicans smugly refused to applaud. I mean, seriously? They hate people living longer? Jeez.
Correct me if you can find a counter-example, but as far as I know, in eight years worth of speeches before Congress, Democratic members never once heckled the bozo who preceded Mr. Obama. Even as Mr. Bush announced plans to strip away our civil liberties and invade a sovereign nation on false pretenses, Democratic members were respectful to the President when he came to speak. Why can Mr. Obama not expect to be extended the same courtesy by the minority party, when all he is doing is telling the truth?
They demand respect and patriotism only when their side is in power.
The GOP, well on its way to becoming merely a southern regional fringe party, obviously has many members who believe that our duly-elected President is "uppity" and undeserving of respect.
It may actually be a good thing that this sentiment is increasingly aired in the open for the civilized world to witness. They're coming out of the closet, in their cleanest, whitest sheets.
What's really funny is that a lot of these congress critters that complain about illegal aliens actually have very few in their state.
It is estimated that South Carolina's illegal alien population is only about 1.6 percent of the total population of the state.
It's mostly just a Rushpublican reich-wing boogeyman that they trot out as an excuse for all their ills.
They seem to be only concerned with the brown illegals.
Joe Wilson will be remembered as the guy who helped President Obama pass health care. It wasn't his intention, but that will be the result.
They have no good ideas for dealing with change, Not one. Except to obstruct it.
Their idea is:
Block all attempts at change, and get paid handsomely by the Insurance Lobby for the effort.
Repeat every 2 or 6 years until retirement or until outed in the obligatory sex scandal.
Pretty good business model, if you lack ethics and a conscience.
exactly
Classic example of "never ask permission--just forgiveness"
Joe Wilson shame on you. Buffy is really angry. We need to be angry at this incredible lack of respect for the office of the President of the U.S.and for the president.
I send major kudos to Mr. Obama for his address and for his restraint.
If I could have reached into the tv I'd have pulled Joe's tongue out of his head and beaten him with it. What a jackass.
On the flip side, our president is a class act.
My sentiments exactly. But what if Wilson was like Forrest Gump? (I mean, like Forrest Gump in his preternatural ability to be present at great historical moments, not in his ability at being a functional moron -- Wilson's already got that one down cold.)
I imagine - (turning back to audience) - it'd go - (scrunching up hair so that it looks like a really bad combover) - a little something like this:
Jesus of Nazareth: Blessed are the poor, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Joe Wilson: You lie! You lie!
Demosthenes, Statesman of Athens: It would be better to die ten thousand deaths, than to do anything out of servility towards Philip.
Joe Wilson: You lie! You lie!
George Washington: I consider it an indispensable duty to close this last solemn act of my Official life, by commending the Interests of our dearest Country to the protection of Almighty God, and those who have the superintendence of them, to his holy keeping.
Joe Wilson: You lie! You lie!
Abraham Lincoln: We cannot dedicate - we cannot consecrate - we cannot hallow - this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.
Joe Wilson: You lie! You lie!
Teddy Roosevelt: People who say that they have not time to attend to politics are simply saying that they are unfit to live in a free community.
Joe Wilson: You lie! You lie!
John F. Kennedy: Ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country.
Joe Wilson: You lie! You lie!
Martin Luther King, Jr.: I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.
Joe Wilson: You lie! You lie!
George W. Bush: Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.
Joe Wilson: You tell it, brother!
Oh, Yeah! I never know if or when doc and buffy are going to comment, so I always check back here. Loved BOTH you guy's comments, buffy seriously got me pumped up, doc satirically got me deflated and laughing my ass off.
KUDOS!
We'll be spreading the word (as usual) on the next blog, trust me.
Doc - your blog was fairly straight-forward, but your comment was hilarious! You da man!
