In remarks that seemed guaranteed to create controversy, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh said today that he was "rooting for the planet Earth to explode" because it would help the GOP retake the White House.
Mr. Limbaugh elaborated on his planet explosion theory, explaining that if the world blows up in the next four years "it will happen on Barack Obama's watch."
"Let's face it, the world exploding would be great for the GOP and Barack Obama knows it," he said. "That's why he is doing everything in his power to keep the planet from blowing up."
While asserting that he had his fingers crossed that the planet would detonate sometime in the next four years, he said that there were other scenarios he found equally appealing.
"If the population of the U.S. was suddenly afflicted with plagues, locusts and open sores, that would be fantastic for the Republican Party," he said. "I'm rooting for all of those things to happen."
In an appearance on CNN, Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele seemed to distance himself somewhat from Mr. Limbaugh's remarks, telling Wolf Blitzer, "Rush is a great entertainer who just wants to make people laugh, like Bobby Jindal."
Hedging a little, Mr. Steele insisted that despite perceived differences, he and Mr. Limbaugh are on the same page: "Rush is rooting for me to fail, and I am in fact failing."

Limbaugh went on to "accidentally" refer to Robert Mugabe, the president of Zimbabwe, as "Barack Ogabe."
"The standard of living has increased in places where there are basic free markets," Limbaugh said. "Where there aren't, of course the standard of living has declined, such as Zimbabwe... now run by Robert Ogabe. Ah -- it's Mugabe. I was confusing him with a well-known Kenyan named Barack Ogabe. This is Robert Mugabe."

In order to gain the political control they've enjoyed over the last ten years, Republican moderates and Reagan conservatives made a pact with the devil (faux Christians, bigots and misanthropes) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats.
They made a strategic decision to manipulate and exploit the ignorance, fears and hatreds of dysfunctional and vulnerable voters in order to win elections rather than lose them by being intellectually and morally honest.
Today, those who conspired with the devil are caught between wanting to disassociate themselves with and or casting out the devil they empowered and the karmic reality that they don't have the numbers to hold on to or regain power without continuing to accept and "advocate" the immoral values, hypocrisies and corruptions that are dividing and destroying their party.
The survival of today's shrinking Republican Party has become so dependent on extremism that they have no significant power left WITH or WITHOUT the support of America's increasingly pernicious lunatic fringe.
The idiom "caught between the devil and the deep blue sea" is certainly appropriate as Republicans are facing the dilemma of choosing between two equally undesirable alternatives that both result in Republican impotence in mainstream American politics. I listen every now and then to keep in touch. The sponsors are sort of "off the wall" out of the mainstream types. Weirdo internet maintenance, odd types. Inconceivable that they can afford to sponsor him in the manner in which he is accustomed to living. It's the station that is a garbage heap, literally. In my city, the once venerable pioneer radio station is now all hate and radical right wing talk all day long and, during NBA season, broadcasts the Spurs games. It is disgusting what they have become---the station, that is. A disgrace.

During the election season Sean Hannity told his radio audience (in response to Michelle Obama's eloquent and moving speech at the DNC where she talked about those things supposedly important to conservatives... their family values, her dreams for their daughters, her relationship with her husband etc):

Rush Limbaugh said that the middle class and the poor believe that the so-called rich or achievers stole their money. Who said that Rush? Obama and the Dems have asked that the rich who got the tax cuts and made incredible sums of money, whereas the middle class and poor are making less - that these rich go back to the days prior to tax cuts and pay a little more. How is that wrong?
If I were as rich as Rush, I suppose I would not want to pay more taxes either...but I have yet to have a $50 million year so at this point I expect the wealthy to step up and pay their fair share.

Historically, especially in the South, the poorest whites were still better than the black man, and this became a mindset among them that guided their worldview.
Rush Limbaugh and the Republican Party represent that worldview. The world order they cling to is a white man's America, an America in which whites are inherently superior to blacks and other people of color, and an America in which men are inherently superior to women. Therefore, even the poorest white person who believes in this worldview, will identify with and support the Republican Party, even if it's against his or her own interest. It makes them feel that they're still better than the black man ... and that becomes a greater priority for them.
I am a registered Independent and I am disgusted by the GOP.

He did it deliberately. The Mugabe reference is just one of the analogies he used to explain why he is didn't want an African American president. The same sentiments were echoed by David Duke, and are now used by Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glen Beck, and even the governor of South Carolina.
What they actually mean is that an African American will destroy the economy like Mugabe has, and David Duke even included Nelson Mandela. This is in no way just mere criticism.
