Bill Maher recently took on the "birther" movement because, in his words, "In America, you know what, if you don't immediately kill errant bullshit no matter how ridiculous, it can grown and thrive and eventually take over like crab grass or cirque du soleil."
"In America," Maher explained, "There is no idea so patently absurd that it can't catch on." The idea catching on here is that Obama is an undocumented alien, with no U.S. birth certificate, and his presidency is, thus, "illegal."
"Lou Dobbs said recently that people are asking a lot of questions about the birth certificate." Maher continued. "Yes. The same people that want to know where the sun goes at night. And... where to put the stamp on their email. And Lou, you're their new king"

I don't understand why this has been perpetuated in the media or why Lou Dobbs still has a job. Ultimately it does not matter where Obama was born, he is a citizen because his mother is a citizen. It is called jus sanguinis.
"jus sanguinis?"
Sounds like fancy book-larnin' words. This is America pal :)
Is 'au jus sanguinis' something you dip a roast beef sandwich in?
jus sanguinis
Aspects of the topic jus-sanguinis are discussed in the following places at Britannica.
basis for citizenship ( in citizenship )
...two main systems used to determine citizenship as of the time of birth: jus soli, whereby citizenship is acquired by birth within the territory of the state, regardless of parental citizenship; and jus sanguinis, whereby a person, wherever born, is a citizen of the state if, at the time of his birth, his parent is one. The United States and the countries of the British Commonwealth adopt the.........
OMG, I just saw one of those signs "Where is the birth certificate?" and I live in Los f r e a k i n g Angeles! I could not believe it and laughed all the way home....I mean L.A. is one of the most Democratic areas in the country and someone wasted their money putting that sign up? That was a hoot---especially since the area where I saw it in was in East Los Angeles which is an area where most people can't even read in English and don't have their own birth certificate to prove they were born in the U.S.--I know because I have plenty of in-laws that live in the area....hee hee hee--the joke's on them....
I don't know about East Los Angeles, but I saw a sign on the 5 fwy south in the city of Commerce, if that's the one your talking about. The 5 fwy in that part of Los Angeles is one of the busiest areas of travel, business and commerce in the state of California. So the sign placement is seen by thousands of travelers, 24 hours a day. It was a very strategic placement.
And that's a pretty big stereotype about the people of East L.A. I too have relatives there and have been doing business in that area for years. "Most" of the people in East L.A. do read and speak english.
Welcome, and is that billboard owned by Clear Channel Communications? One of the media gate keepers that often reject advertisements for other reasons: like cable TV, Radio, broadcast TV, etc. if it offends their masters at the corporate level (not necessarily their other advertisers), with no challenge for "Fair Time" use of their monopoly-status and use of public spectrum and visual pollution? (This is not the day of old Mail Pouch Chewing Tobacco advertisements on red rural barns anymore.)
Time to remove their visual pollution grandfathered poles if they don't have an above board policy to advertisers with a documentable review policy: LA County Supervisors, are you listening - they just gave up their free speech rights as a 'citizen."
I am also choking on equating a live human's rights with a corporation's artificial constructed rights enabled to 'PAC our politicians.'
Doc's following quote was surly one of Bill's (or anyone's) best lines this year:
"Lou Dobbs said recently that people are asking a lot of questions about the birth certificate. Yes, the same people who want to know where the sun goes at night."
Great, just great!
I fell off my chair. So sad, so true. Instead of becoming a smarter country, we seem to becoming more and more, well, "stupid".
THAT WAS FUNNY!!!!! BILL MAHER RULES!!!
your caps lock is stuck again snuffy
America's new motto:
"Yes, we're that stupid!"
Oh my gosh, new? Not new. How about "yes, we're that morbidly obese AND stupid," and you've got it. This is not our country's finest hour, for sure.
I wonder if someone can get Romney, Palin, Jindal, Huckabee, Cantor, McCain, Jeb Bush, Gingrich and other GOP Presidential hopefuls on record regarding their feelings about the birther movement.
I don't know about the others, but both Ann Coulter and Huckabee have weighed in against the birthloonies. And it's come out that McCain's campaign did their own investigation back when the story got started, and found no basis for them.
http://washingtonindependent.com/52474/mccain-campaign-investigated-dismissed-obama-citizenship-rumors
Boy, when ANN COULTER has to be the voice of reason, you know the conservative movement is in trouble!
Chuckle... I was thinking the same thing.
Mitt Romney's father and grandfather were born in Mexico. Surprised that didn't make Lou Dobb's head explode during the primaries.
Fair trade. Obama's birth certificate for Trigg Palin's.
Uh YAY-YUH.
Yes
It's your choice, Republicans. We'll give you President Obama's birth certificate if you give us any of the following: George Bush's National Guard service record, The 18 1/2 minutes missing from the Watergate tapes, or an apology for wasting peoples' time with this nonsense!
Can I get the "Mixed Grill" special?
I'll take just the part of Dubya's records that deal with him being AWOL......
I'll take about 8 or 9 minutes of the Watergate Tapes...
.....and a shrug of their shoulders, with a kind of embarrassed look on their face (instead of a real apology)
What do you mean give them a choice? I demand all three!
we'll take the apology in long form please
I raise you a Chester A Arthur... but they don't want to speak of that.
Wasn't that the school in Die Hard 3?!? heheh
I saw that whole show on HBO, and Maher's studio audience seemed more than a little on the not-knowing-political-history side.
Sometimes I think the audiences on Maher's, Colbert's and Stewart's shows just wait for the end of a sentence, to laugh (or hear themselves laugh). Most times when laughter isn't really called for (to me).
Old cliche, but I do believe at least 50% is the responsibility of the media stranglehold on information.
It's a government controlled media, I was going to say. But that's absolutely wrong.
It's a Corporate-Controlled media. That's what it is. And the other 50% is people not taking and/or having the time to study issues. -- Another area where corporate becomes responsible - a low-wage job keeps people scrambling for wages, time, and family life. Having health insurance from a company that makes you jump thru hoops and fight and fight and then denies you a treatment takes more of your precious time and energy. If you have no insurance, you have even less money and possibly some sort of chronic pain. I just read that like 72% of emergency room visits were pain/dental.
Howard Dean was right. Re-regulation of the media is necessary in order to get our country back.
"Howard Dean was right. Re-regulation of the media is necessary in order to get our country back."
Exactly!
It must also have the profit element removed, like it was in Cronkite's day.
If Cronkite were starting out today, he'd be forced to tow the corporate line for profit margins just like everyone else, or find another career.
The "Birthers" goal is to sow doubt about the legitimacy of Obama's presidency.
These people are of the same vein as the ones that went after Clinton during his presidency.
These re pukes cant handle that a Democrat, let alone a black one, won.
The entire program was good, but I found the interview with Sharlot to be especially horrifying and intriguing. Another highlight was Ware's insights on Afghanistan and Pakistan. And last, but not least, the photo of the dog whose owner saw the image of Jesus in his/her pet's anus--good grief!
And here's a link to the website devoted to the dog, Angus MacDougall:
http://getbehindjesus.net/
Son of a GOD!!! I can't believe it! I thought that rust stain image of Jesus on that guy from Mississippi's weed whacker was somethin', but this?!!!
I'm goin' right out and get saved!!!
All jokes aside, it is pretty amazing, lol!!! And we all know god spelled backwards is...
Why is it that the right wingers never demanded any other president produce a birth certificate? Three guesses.
And the first 2 don't count...lol
Because his father wasn't American and his mother lived all over the world, as did BO himself.
Although I think they're all racists, I think there would be some Birthers even if BO was all-white. I think it's as much about xenophobia and anti-liberalism as much as racist.
The GOP is now trying to spin this into a "liberal media" conspiracy to make all Republican's look like kooks. I'm wondering how badly they are offending the birthers by renouncing them? Will they vote for some third party nut now?
The republican party needs no help in coming off as kooks. all you have to do is look at some of the people who attend those rallies.
Example: The lady in red at the McCain rally, and the birther lady in red who stood up at that republican congressman town hall meeting.
Case closed!
As far as I'm concerned, Bill and Rachel can take over for Katie Couric and Brian Williams tomorrow. Sometimes I watch the news and wonder if it's me who is living in an alternative universe.
Honest to God, how can it be that we have hundreds of serious journalists and politicians daily reporting on this birther non-issue, even slightly entertaining the question of President Obama's citizenship. Aren't we are fighting two wars? Aren't there thousands of vetrans without housing, children without healthcare, and heads-of-households without jobs???
How is it that I can tune in to any channel and hear about someone else demanding to see Obama's birth certificate, AS IF IT HASN'T ALREADY BEEN SHOWN umpteen thousand times? Yet Rachel Maddow seems to be the ONLY one investigating this creepy, cult-like, highly irregular, and ethically suspicious C STREET AFFAIR that involves many (exactly how many BTW?) of the highest leaders of our land? What is going on in this country?
Bill Maher is absolutely right. This is no laughing matter. After the evils loosed upon our nation during the last administration (war, torture, and, well, what do they call it when someone tries to circumvent the government? treason?) it seems the GOP is letting loose some pretty dangerous nuts, naysayers, termites, and mold. We need to get with it.
Wouldn't it be nice if the news media was in the business of reporting factual news and not just repeating whatever somebody said as if just saying it makes it true? If there's a law about truth in advertising, how come there isn't one about truth in news reporting?
That all went out the window when GE was allowed to buy NBC, Disney/Viacom purchased ABC, CBS was bought by (don't recall) and Rupert Murdoch, an Australian citizen was allowed to own his own network, FOX and purchase the WSJ. Corporate America now owns the 'content' that comes through your television screen and is printed in your daily paper. That's why places like doc's are the last bastions of free exercise of the people's 1st Amendment rights.
The burden of proof lies with the birthers. They have yet to provide ONE piece of factual evidence that Obama was born in Kenya. We have his certificate of live birth issued by the state of Hawaii, the state of Hawaii TWICE declaring he was born there, two birth announcements...what do they have to the contrary? Absolutely nothing but a rumor. Birthers, where is your proof? Show us ANYTHING to back up your mouth.
Yes it does and it also proves that the bunch that elected GWB are still with us :(
Birthers are Bigots first, loonies second, and poor losers in the end. And their goal is to throw sand in the wheels and gears of progress.
"Will a day come when the race will detect the funniness of these juvenilities and laugh at them - and by laughing at them destroy them? For your race, in its poverty, has unquestionably one really effective weapon - laughter. Power, money, persuasion, supplication, persecution - these can lift at a colossal humbug - push it a little - weaken it a little, century by century; but only laughter can blow it to rags and atoms at a blast. Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand. You are always fussing and fighting with your other weapons. Do you ever use that one? No; you leave it lying rusting. As a race, do you ever use it at all? No; you lack sense and the courage."
-- Satan, in Mark Twain's "The Mysterious Stranger"
Mark Twain believed and felt that way, because it was true, for HIM. I doubt Samuel Clemens had any more deadly weapon in his personal arsenal, than Mark Twain's sense of humor.
An excellent quote for the situation. Thank you!
co-sign! Brilliant!
Bill is right.Errant bullhockey also includes stimulous that does not stimulate, trains from vegas to disney ,50 billion to GM that cannot possibly be paid back, taxpayer funds for working autos to be destroyed.Bill is right, obomunism needs to end soon.
And Bill Maher can probably spell "stimulus", "Obama" and "communism." How did Republicans ever get a reputation for being smart? Ohh yes, I remember now, that was a long time ago...a very long time ago.
..and in a galaxy far far away...
Yes, AZ, let's go back to those "wonderful" Bush years, when our economy was on the verge of total collapse and Republican Treasury Secretary Paulsen literally got on his knees and begged Nancy Pelosi for help, while George Bush sat on his ass. Bush started with a surplus. If only Obama could have been that fortunate.
I'm not surprised. A country that re-elected George W Bush with help from people like AZ, and where too many people like AZ believe, against all evidence, that the US has the best health care system in the world.
I love Bill Maher!
Bill and Jon Stewart are the two must trusted, and insightful broadcasters in my mind.
Am I defective?
yes. their poor sources of info.
yeah, the Fox liars and Rush are so much more reliable.. you are quite the comedian! Oh wait .. repubs have no sense of humor so .. you're just stoopid!
Find the WMD yet, AZ?
The WMD are BUSH/CHENEY and their Party of NO!!!
mahar is a socialist like obama
Learn how to write a sentence, then get back to us.
Get off my socialist highways, and stay out of my socialist schools, in fact, just get out AZ.
Yes! For all the socialist program hating Conservatives like our resident troll AZ, "on principle" they should ALL begin building their own personal private roads, bridges etc. for their traveling needs and personally pay for the continued maintenance of those roads etc.
They should also sign a document releasing the fire department and police force from having to respond to any fire at their homes, or any crimes in progress affecting them and their families....stating instead that they prefer the personal responsibility of hiring PRIVATE Corporations to protect their homes and families, paying the bill for their services all by their selves.
They should also pick up and deliver their own mail. Pay for each of their children's education from pre-school through college, privately with out any Government help through Public tax dollars and/or VOUCHERS.
After they add up what their anti-socialist "PRIVATE" costs, verses the social government programs will be, they will all be begging to pay "so-called Government SOCIALIST taxes" collectively with the rest of us to lower their costs for their own best interests!
I'm sick and tired of their faux complaints and phony anti-socialist rants.
They should either be consistently principled or get off the pot!
Bill Maher does the best political commentary of anyone, including Jon Stewart. I thought this was one of the best Bill Maher monologues ever. What's great about democracy--everyone having the right to voice their opinion--has the often irritating component of having to listen to all the nut cases like AZ & Rush, but it seems that the nut cases sooner or later lose their momentum and are seen by the majority for what they are, thanks to their drowning out eventually by voices of reason, like Bill Maher's.
GOP Crowd = "Stupid people talking to Stupid people"
Classic Bill Maher.
I REALLY gotta get HBO
That video was great!! And we can thank the GOP for allowing this ridiculous birther conspiracy to fester and grow. They could have squelched it long ago, but no doubt they felt there was much to be gained by allowing it to gain traction. It occurred to me the other night that the entire GOP is one gigantic very dysfunctional personality disorder caused by group think and promoted by their leadership. The one way you can tell is, like individuals with serious personality orders, they require an extraordinary amount of energy to deal with. They're exhausting. It's like they just suck the life right out of the room.
I think Bill Maher was really born in Canada.
He sounds more Canadian than USian.
I'm not really mad at the birthers. It's just that I would like to see their death certificates.
Too funny! LMAO
That's a good one, very good.
Lol.. Whoa!..
lol
You will get your wish pretty soon because the ones who support the "birther" movement are really really old white dudes.
Unless this country truly devolves to a cult-like level, a la North Korea and Nazi Germany -- and it really isn't likely, the birthers/teabaggers will just guarantee the re-election of democrats.
It's no different than the Republicans nodding sagely and giving credence to alien abductions, crop circles, and the Earth being 6,000 years old. Oh, wait a sec...
I seriously doubt there would be a birther movement if the president was a Caucasian democrat.
This shows just how bad the education system in the USA is.
Go to the DMV, SS office, passports, etc. and try to obtain services without a birth certificate...
this man was a Senator in Chicago, someone would have caught that back then...
they have a copy of the certificate of live birth-which Hawaii issues, the announcement in the newspaper from whatever year it was and these "people" still have questions simply because they can't stand the sight of a Black man running the most powerful office in the world.
The birthers are just freightened white people under the confederate, religious, intolerant republican banner who do not know how to stop the colorization of America.
They thought that "their God" would protect them from dark people, and it didn't. So they lash out like children having a tantrum.
Intelligence is not required to be a hateful republican bigot, only fear is required..
Small GOP minds love to talk about non-existent issues.
I also love the shots of Rachel Maddow and hard-bitten journo Michael Ware guffawing in the background. With Maher's best monologue yet, this looks like a fantastic episode - can't wait to download it on iTunes when it becomes available.
"Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."
This premise is the mainstay of today's Rightwing. Those who are non analytical, given to bigotry and easily led fall victim to these bumper sticker ideas.
Anything that requires cognitive thinking is over their heads. A leader in Germany during the 1920's and 30's realized this with great success (can't bring myself to say his name, you know who).
Recent polls indicate that over half of those who identify themselves as Republicans fall into this category.
This is a collective danger that we all face. When a major political party can be swayed by factless hate backed drivel we are all in trouble.
As the ruling elite in Germany who made a deal with the above mentioned leader found out you cannot control this. The McCain Palin rallies indicated how close this is to the surface of the Republican Party. McCain had to forcefully put the cork back in the bottle. We may not be so lucky if the next Republican leader uses this blind hatred to gain power.
We've already seen that the American people will roll over and let their Constitutional rights be trampled. We are now in a deep economic recession. The leader mentioned above came to power during the Depression. Adding these three elements together could bring forth a bitter witches brew that may poison us forever.
Oh trust me, this is only the beginning. We are talking about a group of people that are driven by hatred, racism, guns and violence.
We are talking about a group of people (neoCons) that have already proven violence and murder are their way of solving a dispute. Go take a look at the forums on Breitbart or any story Drudge links to...it's downright scary. Death threats, race baiting...this group is becoming unhinged at the seams...and while it may just be teabag rallies and blue hairs screaming in town hall meetings and racist email threads now...we all know what their next step will be. It's only a matter of time with these psychopathic neoCons. And the republican leaders are more than happy to fan the flames.
Like grandma said, "I want MY (white) country back".
I seem to remember an incident in Oklahoma's capital a while back...
Let me guess...
did it happen in 1995?
photo
Americans allowed W Bush to be selected President in 2000 and actually elected him in 2004. If no event in America's history sheds light on American's ability to act "stupidly", these single events should!
Many Americans can be very lazy people and pretty much accept anything.
Some of us are really lazy. We just don't like to have to think for ourselves. This makes us fair game for all kinds of idiot schemes.
Way to go, Bill! I wish you weren't hidden away on HBO where many Americans don't have access to your intelligence and insightful wit. I'm just disgusted with these "birthers" and the whole conservative faction of this country. With FOX news and right-wing radio, this country has become so bitterly divided that no self-respecting conservative can ever admit that someone in their party sucks, or that someone from the other party has some good ideas. They are eager to hear the worst about any Dem, no matter how irrational, no matter how much that Democrat may be representing a better solution to America's problems than the empathy-impaired Republicans. This country makes me sick sometimes.
Birthers also conveniently ignored the fact that McCain was physically born in Panama while his father was stationed there. Liberals have never challenged that as a means to disqualify him. Thank God we never had to stoop to their level.
When the left wing lunatics started trying to play the angle of McCain's birth in Panama, the Democrats in Congress, including Obama and Hilary Clinton immediately passed a resolution stating he was a US Citizen and eligible to run for President. The difference between the parties is clear. I'm so glad to be a liberal.
"New Poll: Less Than Half Of Republicans Believe Obama Was Born In U.S."
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/07/31/new-poll-less-than-half-o_n_248470.html
It's pretty obvious where the Lizard People are.
Love the Cirque de Soleil shot
It's true beyond any shadow of a doubt, that the Birthers are quintessentially psychiatric and Bill Maher is right. Paranoid-delusional thought is not amenable to any form of treatment, therefore in order for Dem.s to move social and political discourse forward, the national conversation must be engaged, then swiftly distracted. Just as we pounded Palin into the permafrost, we must now engage the Birthers and pound them into bedrock, too. There are no options here; they simply won't go away.
The American people are being propagandized by a far right element in this country that dominates talk radio and Fox News.
They go way beyond the rational in their criticisms of Barack Obama. They accuse him of being a foreigner, a communist, a fascist, a Nazi, a socialist, a dictator - you name it, they have called him it.
This isn't just the extreme right like the guy who shot up the Holocaust Museum a few months ago, but your mother, or father or brother or the guy in the cubical next to yours. In comparison, it makes the left look like a bunch of Sunday School teachers in their criticisms of Bush.
The answer is not to suppress their speech. This would obviously be unconstitutional. Instead, all rational Americans need to call these wackos out who are leading this charge, as Maher has done.
However, it must not just be political humorists like Maher, Stewart, Colbert, and doc, but politicians, the people who work for politicians, the guy that cuts your hair or serves you in the supermarket or the doctor that treats your ailments. In other words, any American who believes in liberty and freedom and rationality.
We MUST NOT STAY SILENT in the face of this onslaught against our President, our country, our system of government, and its institutions. We must not speak in fear or anger, but with love, rationality, empathy, and compassion.
In other words, in the exact opposite language of our opponents.
Fabulous, Anachronist! Very well stated. When you react in anger, THEY win. Non-violence , as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi showed the world will win in the end. Sometimes I get angry about injustice, to the point of becoming non-violent and then the way of Gandhi reminds me that it would be a path to defeat, not victory.
At a time, when the British ruled India and put him along with others in jail for years, Gandhi never lost his sense of humor. When asked by someone what he thought of western civilization, Gandhi's reply was" "I think it is a good idea!"
They won't listen. Lizards don't have ears
I love Bill Maher, his last "New Rule" is always my favorite part of his show. I really commend HBO for giving him a venue. Actually, I commend HBO for many of its programs, they take chances not seen on other networks, some of their documentaries are the best and most eye-opening out there. You all should see Mississippi Prom--about segregated proms (still going on!) in MS.
Mississippi = Texas without the good roads.
I read that somewhere
Can some one forward this to Lou Dobbs, the new king of the Lizard people?
The so-called "birthers" need to realize one thing, Barack Obama IS President of The United States. I suppose they are just a small band of right-wing biggots who are bitter over their Grand OLD Party losing the election. They are desperate and are grasping at anything to place their leaders back in power, their leaders who care nothing about the people who they are supposed to represent. Their leaders want power for power sake.
I saw a poll recently. It's generally right wingers from the South who believe this crap. Right wingers from the West, East, and Midwest didn't buy into it. You connect the dots.
Strange.
Yep and those right wingers in the South take their white sheets to the dry cleaners twice a month. Now why would anyone take white sheets to the dry cleaners?
Because they are silk and have nice cross decorations on them!
They are not a small band, but represent about 40% of the Republican Party. We must all speak against these fantasies of the irrationalists which can be your sons and daughters, your father and mother, your friends and neighbors. This is not isolated to some quasi Nazi group. This is slowly becoming conventional wisdom within the right wing of the Republican Party.
This boils down to wanting a do-over for the election. All these claims were made prior to Nov 2008, and American listened to reason and voted for Obama. Birthers cannot stand that America willingly elected a black Democrat. They are convinced that America was duped ("he wasn't vetted"), and they will expose him.
It seems the birth certificate issue is running out of steam. Enough evidence and officials, including Republicans, have attested to his Hawaiian birth. So birthers have recently tried a new claim - that to be a natural-born citizen, one's parents must both be US citizens. This is false and absurd, but it also reveals them overplaying their hand.
The birth certificate claim rested on a secret - the full, original, long-form birth certificate. Members of Congress, Supreme Court, FBI, Secret Service, his campaign rivals, could be excused for thinking Obama was really the president, because they didn't know the secret hidden in his "real" birth certificate. Birthers would reveal that secret and everyone's eyes would be opened to Obama the fraud!
But the claim of Obama's parentage doesn't rest on a secret. Everyone knows Obama's father wasn't a US citizen. Are the birthers claiming that they know more about the Constitution and what the founders meant by "natural-born citizen" than EVERY elected official? Do they think that the government is going to slap their collective foreheads and exclaim "oh no, I forgot about the 2-citizen-parents rule when I certified Obama as President!"?
To all those who blame the media for the incitement to hate and bigotry, I agree.
But a lesser known source of information is often overlooked, and more offensive than Fox Noise.
The religious channels.
They long ago dropped Jesus from their sermons for subjects more controversial and often downright racist, inciting to violence, and dangerous.
Most of the religious shows have adopted the News format followed by commentaries that make Glenn, Billo, Ann, and Rush like choir boys.
Lunatics like the Tea Baggers and the Birthers get their news from those source which are disguised as faith based.
You are so correct about the "Christian" radio and cable stations.
I had someone tell me they believe that Obama is a too busy killing babies to get anything else done! They don't listen to any other news, even Fox, because it is tainted. They get their entire world view from the "ministers" and the gospel according to Sarah. They are the "ones" she refers too in her coded messages.
Expect more "birth certificates in a baggie" disruptions of real discourse on important issues. Bill Maher, is correct, they are crab grass to democracy.
Again we turn to the comics to tell it like it is. So darn true, we keep thinking being rational is our safeguard against the lizard people, and they too will see the light. No they won't, and the repubs like them that way.
These are all the children that were left behind in their school programs. They are kept on a high manic level of activity - guess which constituency writes to leaders outnumbering us by a landslide? They can organize tea parties, hate-ins, protests....we can't even get a march planned in Washington for health care. We are the majority here and we need to be way more vocal. Obama needs to crank up the machine he got going to get elected, and use it to organize once again the voices for change.
Ah, but now, no child is left behind. If they work hard enough, they can, in a fixed election or two, become president.
While I agree that "cranking up the machine" would or could or might be successful, I see the problem as that we of that machine are starving on the streets, getting thrown out of our homes, foreclosed, unemployed, and pretty focused on trying to stay alive.
I fear that this was the rethug plan, and that it may be working.
Bastards.
I think you are on to something.
I know it. I'm living proof. And, as old as I am, it gets scarier every day...all the hatred. If these birthers want to live in a theocracy, they should go live in Iran. I understand that Achmedimbulb is looking for a few good holocaust deniers...
Lizard/cave people
I have noticed that a lot of these mega T.V. ministers have come out against President O, yet I watched how they carefully never said anything bad about (W) kinda make one wonder !
Because Bush was a born-again, and President Obama is just... a Christian.
The logic is simple - religious bigotry.
Obama is not a Christian in the eyes of his Haters... He's a Muslim, you betcha!
And Bush was very white!
Obama is a born-again Christian; however, you are right in that the religious right won't accept this, because he comes from a politically more liberal religious church. However, he is just as Christian as any Southern Baptist preacher that is preaching on Sunday morning.
Yes, Mr. Obama is born again, as is anyone who receives baptism. But he doesn't wear it as a badge of honor and acceptance. He just lives it.
To the baptist minister in the south, being born again has to be done their way, or it doesn't count.
I think now it's safe to say that 90% of the birthers know Obama was born in Hawaii. That this is a bullshit phony attack, and it's an attempt to weaken a legally elected president.
They are trying to take our democracy away from us. I have redefined the birthers from stupid to down right evil. The birthers need to be taken out RIGHT FREAKING NOW!
I'm serious.
Agreed. I believe it to be a seditious attempt to bring down a legitimately elected democrat. It worked with Clinton.
Someone powerful is pulling the birthers' strings, because not one of the puppets we have seen seems bright enough to concoct this story.
The people that are puling the birthers' strings are right wing radio and TV. It is folks like Lou Dobbs, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, and the like, who are media puppets for their repub corporate bosses.
Actually, it didn't work with Clinton. He left office with a high approval rating in spite of the holier-than-thou Rep. Sanford and others voting for his impeachment.
It did work on Clinton. He didn't get much of his agenda pushed through because of these right wing attacks and remember, he lost Congress.
History would have been much different if he hadn't been tainted by Whitewater, Paula Jones, and Monica Lewinsky.
So unfortunately the rightwing did succeed, regardless of how popular Clinton was at the end of his Presidency.
I'm a Democrat, and it's painful but a fact that the Democrats at that point in time lost Congress. Their hubris and inability to confront the Repugs in the culture wars led to the 94 Revolution. Furthermore, it was the screwup on Hillarycare in 93, that and the gun control legislation, that mobilized the base and turned against the remaining southern Democrats. Whitewater didn't have traction and it was only because Bill lied under oath that the Impeachment stuck. Regardless he did a fairly excellent job domestically and foreign policy wise.
Birthers don't want proof of what they don't believe. They want to hold onto doubt regardless of evidence.
Looking at the pic doc posted of Barack Obama's birth certificate collectible porcelain commemorative plate gives me an idea for some enterprising folks to make some buck$ producing Obama's birth certificate (in a light background) on stationary ie. sticky notes etc . . .

Great idea. How about using it as e-mail stationery?
T-Shirt! I wanna a T-Shirt with the Birth Certificate on the front and the Finger on the back!
